Coaches Report AGM 2014
HEAD COACHES REPORT – AGM 2014 Coaches Report AGM 2014
The past twelve months have been a busy time for the coaches, swimmers, parents and volunteers. Our membership has risen to over 140 swimmers and children are still attending for assessment and hoping to be given places in our squads. Whilst swimmers leave the sport and move on to other things, others appear out of the woodwork to replace them.
Our volunteers have worked tirelessly to ensure that Scottish Swimming Memberships and Child Protection Forms are completed to ensure that we have only properly accredited individual’s poolside with our kids. I would encourage parents to help poolside as long as they are accredited by the PVG system designed to protect children and vulnerable groups. We can arrange that.
• Training in Stirling
Six sessions have been booked for next year at the National Swimming Academy in Stirling and we will be offering places to Step Rock swimmers too. Last season saw us train there on seven occasions with Step Rock sending along swimmers for almost all sessions. This close working between the two North East Fife clubs has positively impacted on swimmers and coaches relationships, with swimmers from both clubs cheering one another on at galas. This is an admirable situation to find ourselves in and is one that should be actively encouraged and enhanced over the coming seasons.
• Swim Camps
As part of my role coaching with the Fife Performance Swimming Squad, I delivered a week long Easter Swim Camp at Lochgelly High School which was attended by seven swimmers from CADSC. Gina Logan also on the first day and shared her experiences from previous Commonwealth Games with the swimmers. Whilst nothing has yet been arranged, I would like to run a Summer Swim Camp at Cupar for our local swimmers. Keep your eyes peeled for info on the website and club noticeboard.
• Dalguise
A large group of club swimmers attended at Dalguise once again this year and had a fantastic time. My thanks to the coaches and parents who helped arrange and supervise this event. Such team building weekends are invaluable to help our athletes bond. They enjoyed it so much, they are going back next year again. Please look to book your space soonest. Any swimmer in P7 up, can go along.
• Coaching Fife Area Squad
From November 2013, until the end of the season in June, I was appointed and acted as the Fife Area Squad Coach delivering training sessions, land work and education inputs to swimmers from nearly all of the Fife clubs. It was with great regret that I was unable to commit to coaching the squad this season too.
• Scottish Swimming – District Programme
11-yr-old Adam Young and 14-yr-old Ollie Carter achieved the necessary national times to gain entry into the Scottish Swimming District Regional Programme and have already attended the first full day of training held in Edinburgh. At Adam’s venue, he was taught by Ross Murdoch’s coach (winner of gold medal in 200m Breaststroke at Commonwealth Games in July) who showed him new swim techniques. Ollie qualified last year and this time round is training with the older group. He was also chosen to attend the national stroke camp which he found invaluable. We have several young swimmers who may go on to achieve times this year and I wish them all the best in their efforts to qualify. Two more full days of training yet to come for Ollie and Adam.
• Continuing Professional Development
Over the last year I have attended three District Regional Programme days as well as two full days at the National Swimming Academy in Stirling working with the national swim coach on stroke days for Butterfly and Freestyle, where Robbie Renwick was the swimmer. Furthermore, I have attended three CPD events at the Tayside and Fife Institute of Sport to maintain my skill levels and keep my coaching knowledge relevant and up to date.
• Performance Swimming
The Fife Performance Swim Squad unfortunately folded very recently, despite all of the efforts to keep the squad alive since the loss of the head coach last November.
This has led to the creation of a local training squad in North East Fife, with swimmers from Cupar and Step Rock training together at Cupar and Glenrothes under the guidance of former Cupar Head Coach Russ Green. This group is still in its infancy and hopes are high that we will be able to maintain a coherent and well organised group to enhance swimming at a local level. This should thereby reduce the need for swimmers to move to other clubs to access greater levels of swim time. Recent decisions surrounding this group have caused me concern and I am working hard to resolve my disquiet with the existing arrangements. Rest assured, I am fully committed to our swimmers receiving the highest levels of training at a local level.
14-yr-old Oliver Carter continues to take giant steps toward selection into the GB squad with his recent performances placing him very close to the times needed for selection to the national disability team. An existing member of Scottish Swimming’s Talent Programme and a Sports Aid Athlete, Ollie has also recently joined the ‘Next Generation’ athlete programme which ensures his development can continue to improve.
• Coaching Teams
Our coaching team continue to enjoy healthy levels of participation in swimming across the club. We currently have the weekly services of 14 coaches:
Junior Squad Coaches
Assistant Teacher John Wishart Assistant Teacher Kenny Wishart
Assistant Teacher Tracey Lorimer Assistant Teacher Jane Reay
Assistant Teacher Callum Ellis-Morton Assistant Teacher Jane Staal (soon to commence her teachers course )
Senior Club Coaches
Swim Teacher Mark McQuilton Swim Teacher Catriona McCrone
Coach Wendy Hay Swim Teacher Forrest Hamilton
Assistant Teacher Jacqui Houston Assistant Teacher John Innes
Assistant Teacher Alan Cousins Assistant Teacher Tony Thorne
Confirmation of a pool closure, muted earlier this year, has been confirmed and committee members are currently working to find alternative training venues for the club. The pool will close on the 5th January for a period of ten-twelve weeks to allow upgrading/alterations to be carried out within the swimming pool area.
Junior Squads Report by Coach John Wishart
At the AGM in 2011 I reported that we had 34 swimmers in the junior squads and can report that we now have 80 swimmers between all 4 groups. Due to the numbers on the waiting list we were able to get another two lanes at 5.30 on a Thursday evening which further increased our capacity. We continue to assess swimmers on a weekly basis which is testimony to the reputation that the Club has in the community.
The success of the Junior groups is as always due to the enthusiastic contribution made by the teachers of varying experience who actually teach the children and I am very fortunate to have at present probably the best team of teachers I have ever had on poolside, so my thanks goes to them and to the swimmers who are willing to come along to teach and demonstrate. Once again I would like to thank Gina Logan for the courses she has run during the year. We must ensure that teachers continue to be offered courses which will maintain the standards of teaching throughout the club in the future.
Our young swimmers have competed in Galas at Glenrothes and Perth and we host our own Novice Gala on Saturday 29th of November. These galas are used to introduce swimmers to competitive swimming in a supportive and friendly environment and introduces parents to the joys of timekeeping/team management.
I would like to mirror John’s comments about the support and levels of improvement within the Junior Squad. Having coached them semi-regularly, they are all keen as mustard and try very hard during sessions. The level of parent support is excellent and the envy of other clubs.

LEAD COACHES REPORT – COACHES REPORT SEPTEMBER 2014 (Recovered)
24th September 2014
Since my last report in August the following has taken place:
• Swimmers attended the Dunedin Meet in Dunfermline and performed exceptionally well for so early in the season. The meet report has been previously circulated.
• Club swimmers attended the NSA in Stirling for the first of the Fife Area Squad sessions with two separate sessions held owing to squad numbers being high this year. The 6th September saw the older swimmers train, with the 20th September involving our younger kids. Feedback so far has been very positive.
• On Sunday 14th September, the Geordie Wotherspoon and Fife Championships were held in Glenrothes and once again the swimmers produced some fantastic times. Both reports have been previously circulated.
• Oliver Carter competed as part of the Scottish Swimming Team at the Sainsbury UK Schools in Manchester, where he achieved a personal best time in each of his races and won a Bronze medal in the 100m Backstroke final.
• Morgan and Kerri Stalker have both left the club’s Silver squad to focus on sporting activities away from swimming. We wish them both the best in their future endeavours.
• Confirmation from the pool management that the pool at Cupar is not closing until early 2015 for repair is great news as this allows us time to plan an alternative venue without having to rush to do so.
• This coming Sunday (28th September) 11-yr-old Adam Young will be taking part in the first of the District Regional Programme days hosted at Drumbrae swimming pool in Edinburgh and I will be there to support him for the day. Ollie Carter is at Foresthill with the level two’s for what will be his second year of involvement in the DRP.
• Our next meet is the East District Time Trial held in Prestonpans over the weekend the 4th/5th October. Seven club swimmers will be racing for new times to allow them to access the series of East District galas over the coming months.
• Cupar and Step Rock swimmers continue to train twice weekly with former head coach Russ Green as part of the clubs commitment to encouraging a swimmer pathway to performance swimming.

Dunedin Meet in Dunfermline produced a wealth of lifetime best swims
The recent Dunedin Meet in Dunfermline produced a wealth of lifetime best swims but this week it was revealed that two of the medal winners not only picked up new times but also set new club records. Ten-year-old Charlotte Williamson, a pupil at St Leonards, set a new club record in the 100m Backstroke setting a time of 1.23.96 breaking a record set way back in 1998. Breaststroke specialist, Lewis Baillie, picked up the silver medal in the 200m race and took six-seconds off his time previous best. A check of the records revealed Lewis too had broken a club record set 23yrs ago in 1991. Congratulations to both swimmers on setting new club records.’

RESULTS OF THE GEORDIE WOTHERSPOON GALA – MICHAEL WOODS CENTRE, GLENROTHES – SUNDAY 14th SEPTEMBER, 2014
Download Here – Info Sheet – Geordie Wotherspoon
Cupar and District’s finest young swimmers took to the water on Sunday, competing in the Geordie Wotherspoon, which brings together all of the novice league swimmers from earlier in the year. A total of six individual medals were won and fourteen lifetime best swims produced by a team of excited and focussed kids.
Coaches Callum Ellis Morton, Jane Staal and I organised the swimmers for the warm up and races and were treated to some magnificent performances. Jessica MacLeod, soon to start training with Fins in Kirkcaldy, started off the day with a good race in the backstroke, narrowly missing out on a PB. Next up was Kate Dalglish who started strongly and worked her socks off to hold onto second place throughout the race, securing a silver medal for her efforts. Kiera Lorimer, quickly becoming a gala regular, also swam really well and taking over five-seconds off her previous PB. Theo Ellis Morton had watched the girls racing and he too produced a thrilling neck and neck race to just be touched out at the wall but picked up a well-deserved silver medal and a fabulous new PB.
Sophie and Marcel were up next in the 25m Butterfly. Marcel put in a spirited swim making the best improvement of the day by taking over eight seconds off his previous time. Sophie swam very confidently and won her heat by several meters leading to a massive smile and a gold medal too. Hannah Staal and Owen Anderson were both really looking forward to their Freestyle races and they delivered excellent swims setting lifetime bests with Hannah ducking under 20 seconds for the first time.
The older swimmers then took over racing, competing over 50m. Danielle and Amy were first in the water for the backstroke with both setting new PB’s and in a very competitive and thrilling race, Amy picked up the bronze medal having worked her way up from fifth at the turn. Jock then followed, new goggles on, swimming a good race but caught the lane rope with his elbow near the finish which slowed him down, otherwise a PB was very much on the cards. Rowan and Torin then marshalled for the breaststroke with Rowan up first. Looking nervous at the start, she started quickly from the blocks and came up in the lead, a position she held throughout the entire race, finishing well at the wall to secure a gold medal. Torin who has made real improvement in his breaststroke recently swam well in an exciting heat and took almost six-seconds off his previous best.
50m Fly had Grace and Oliver determined to swim well. Grace maintained a regular stroke throughout her heat and was rewarded with a lifetime best swim. Oliver then raced in the most keenly contested race of the day, finishing in third place and winning a bronze medal and setting a PB too. The top three were all within 0.20 seconds of one another!! The last individual events were the 50m Freestyle races where Isla and Inver competed for points. Isla had a confident and only just missed setting a new PB. Inver, always determined to swim at his best, raced in the first heat and put in a stirring race setting a lifetime best swim taking two-seconds off.
The morning finished, as per usual, with the age-group medley relays. First up were our nine and under girls all of whom had raced brilliantly in the heats. The question was, how would they get on as a team? Well, that was answered quickly by an emphatic win with a gap of over six-seconds before the next team finished. Gold medals to all four girls and more delighted smiles. The 10-12yr old girls finished in fourth place with all four pushing themselves really hard. The final race saw our older boys in the water. They too gave 100% and were deserved winners of the bronze medal position.
Medals were handed out by local girl Kathryn Johnstone, Scottish Commonwealth Games Team member and breaststroke finalist in the games.
Oliver Goad and Cameron McMaster were jointly recognised for their huge improvement during the novice gala season earlier this year when they were awarded with the ‘Most improved boy in Fife’ trophy. The trophy is going to live in each of their houses for six-months. Last season we picked up the most improved girl award too, so our coaches are doing great things with our younger swimmers. My thanks to all those who helped to judge and timekeep in support of our swimmers and the club.

Blairgowrie Novice Gala – Perth 31/8/2014
Blairgowrie Novice Gala – Perth 31/8/2014
On Sunday 31st August a team of the best young swimmers from our beginner groups (The Real Novices) travelled to Perth to compete in a Gala organised by Blairgowrie Swimming Club. Also competing were Dundee Aquatics and Kinross Otters.
If anyone is wondering about the quality of swimmer we have in our beginner groups then they would only have to have watched our swimmers at Perth. From winning the first freestyle relay to winning the final Cannon relay all swimmers gave their best. Indeed every event was done in a personal best by the Cupar swimmer which led eventually to Cupar winning the Gala Cup.
It would be wrong to pick out one swimmer in particular however I have to mention the contribution made by Torin Ellis-Morton. He was the only 10 and over boy we had in the team and so had to swim all the strokes and the relays and yet he accepted the task without complaint.
The full team was: Jorja Darlington, Kate Dalglish, Callum Lindsay, Theo Ellis-Morton, Emily Rea, Sophie Juskowiak, Cameron Blair, Micah vanBlerk, OliviaMcLennan, Emma Blair,Torin Ellis-Morton.
Well done to all.
DUNEDIN RESULTS
The first gala of the season saw over twenty Cupar swimmers racing over the weekend at Carnegie Leisure Centre, Dunfermline. In total we scooped twelve medals across the two-days, with 10-yr-old Charlotte Williamson accounting for five of them (and she only swam one-day!!). Swimmers raced in a total of 87 swims, with personal best times gained in 69 of them, with the two biggest improvements coming from Millie Buchan and Ellen McQuilton. Peruse the results and you’ll see that several swimmers achieved PB’s in all of their swims. Catriona Cleary is back on last season’s PB drive, with seven from seven this weekend. She’d better watch out for Eve Hewitt though as she too managed a similar feat in her first major gala outing and justified her imminent move to Silver Squad.
Charlotte not only picked up five medals, but set PB’s in all of the races she raced in. Just reward for the application she has shown at training. Her 50m Backstroke was the highlight for me with prodigious power and speed achieved through great technique. Eve was on top form showing excellent diving technique throughout. Her stable mate, Scarlett, was unfortunately poorly and it was a shame that the two girls, who swim so well together, didn’t get to race together. Grace Finlay of Sharks, ever keen to swim up from the novice league set-up, produced two strong swims to set lifetime bests and identify herself as a swimmer to watch out for in the future.
Kiera and Isla Lorimer competed on Saturday morning, both setting excellent new breaststroke times, with Isla just missing out on a new IM time. Louise Moncrieff had three races, setting PB’s in the first two, swimming really well in the 50m Breaststroke showing great technique. Sister Lindsay set PB’s in all three of her swims, with her 100m IM a particularly strong swim, showing good technique across all four strokes. Jock and Lucy Robertson swam on different days, with Lucy producing a great performance in her 100m Free, although she may have jumped the gun by a tiny fraction of a second but that didn’t detract from a solid swim. Jock, still new to the whole gala thing, swam a positive 100m Breaststroke taking nearly five-seconds off his entry time.
Ollie Goad had a mixed day with two lifetime bests, two others just missed and a DQ to give him a full hand. A determined swimmer, Ollie’s highlight was his 50m Backstroke a race in which he just gets faster and faster. The Baillie boys were all in attendance over the weekend. Findlay picked up a medal in the breaststroke, which isn’t unusual for Findlay, but his best racing of the weekend was without doubt his Freestyle where in both the 50m & 200m races he turned in superb performances setting excellent lifetime bests. Euan, racing on Sunday, set a new time for his 50m Fly but just missed out on his 100m swim. The 50m Freestyle saw Euan pitted against younger brother Lewis and in what was a cracking race, Euan smashed the 30-second-barrier for the first time much to his delight. Lewis finished just a half-second behind to set a new PB too. This weekend saw Lewis as a real tour-de-force in club swimming, with four medals going his way and five out of six races being lifetime bests. Best swim of the weekend for me was his 200m Breaststroke where he smashed his previous PB by six-seconds giving the Inverness swimmer ahead of him a good run for his money. Brother Findlay’s response was that it was ‘alright’. Watch out for Lewis at the Scottish Schools where he is sure to be a front runner in his premiere event.
Albert Badia joined us for the Saturday morning sessions, picking up PB’s in all three of his races, with his breaststroke swim timed really well. He too is a relative novice at such large competitive meets yet he handled the pressure like an old-hand showing his growing maturity as a competitive swimmer. This was a positive follow on from his races at Cumbernauld in June.
Adam Young had a weekend of ups and downs with some swims first class and other races where he performed out of sorts. Determined to use the races as a springboard for future performance, Adam took on-board coaching feedback and recognises the areas where he needs to focus. He picked up an unexpected medal in the 100m Backstroke much to his delight. Adam is set to enjoy the training delivered by SASA as part of the Bronze Squad programme next month, having secured a well-deserved place last season. 12-yr-old Murdo Denholm was really focussed this weekend on his race preparation and seeking coaching advice, where he went on to produce a string of lifetime bests and enjoyed a thrilling race with Adam in the 200m Freestyle. Taking on the 200m Fly, Murdo showed he is happy to grasp the nettle of challenging swims and produced a good performance in what was his first accredited swim at this distance.
Connor Houston, new to the squad, but a well-known face amongst the swimmers who trained with him at Fife Performance, swam strongly for his new club delivering three out of three lifetime bests, with his 200m Freestyle a particularly good swim. He has settled in quickly at training and is already a well-liked member of the Gold Squad. Millie Buchan showed real form this weekend in her races, setting excellent times, with her 100m IM a ripping race which showcased how hard she has worked on developing her swim skills across the board. Hopefully this will encourage Millie to race more regularly as she is showing good form currently. Cameron McMaster continued to impress me with both is determination and improved skills base. A swimmer who listens well at training, Cameron produced several excellent races and was delighted to win his heat in the 50m Breaststroke where he swam stroke-for-stroke with Adam, just managing to pip him at the post. Adam is recognised by his peers as ‘the one to beat’ given his remarkable swimming talent, so you can imagine how pleased Cameron was to touch him out at the wall. Cameron too is a relative newcomer to competitive swimming but is quickly setting his stamp on things.
Nine-year-old Jessica MacLeod of Sharks had an enjoyable weekend, swimming well in her backstroke race and producing an outstanding race in her 50m Freestyle. Jessica won her heat comfortably and set an excellent time for such a young swimmer showing a well-timed and comfortable stroke. Jessica trained regularly across the summer and is an athlete who listens well and translates training into performance. Like Grace, she is a Junior Club swimmer who is comfortable to take on the challenge of higher level meets. Both Grace and Jessica trained at Glenrothes on Monday’s, coached by Wendy Hay, and their improvement has been helped by them taking on the extra swim time. Last but not least, Catriona Cleary and Ellen McQuilton, two swimmers who train together regularly, both produced some fabulous races and encouraged one-another to swim well. Catriona started last season with a run of 17 personal bests and this year has started in a similar fashion with seven-for-seven. Her 100m Freestyle and Fly races saw her dig deep and produce the goods when it mattered. A swimmer who gets out of swimming what she puts into it. Ellen competed in three races on Sunday and was on top form in each. Her 200m Breaststroke was a fantastic race to watch as she constantly worked hard to catch up with the girl ahead of her. The best performance for me though was her 50m Freestyle where she showed real power in the water. Ellen is committed during training sessions and is then able to use that to good effect in her competitions.
Our next gala is the Geordie Wotherspoon/Fife Championship on Sunday 14th September. My thanks to coaches Duncan Hewitt and Mark McQuilton for their assistance poolside and also to Team Manager Karen Baillie who once again ensured everything ran smoothly.

Dundee Stars of the Future – write up
Full report and results Info Sheet – DCA Stars of the Futurev2
Eleven Cupar and District swimmers travelled to Dundee on Sunday (8th June) for the Stars of the Future meet. The gala was held at the new Olympia Centre and saw fifteen clubs from across the East of Scotland competing. Swimmers competed in both heats and if fast enough to qualify, in finals too. Overall we had fifteen finalists picking up three Bronze and one Silver medal. 27 lifetime best performances were produced in what were often hotly contested heats.
Cameron McMaster competed in three events picking up PB’s in two. In the freestyle race his hat slipped off as he swam, after having spent 15 seconds perched on the top of his head, otherwise I’m confident he would have PB’d. He made second reserve in the 100m Breaststroke but unfortunately didn’t get a swim. Murdo Denholm competed in four races making the finals of the Backstroke and Butterfly in a weekend where he didn’t perform at his best but showed what a committed swimmer he is by making finals. 11-yr-old Louise Moncrieff enjoyed a superb weekend of racing, setting several huge PB’s and making the final of the 100m Butterfly. Isla Lorimer competed in the 100m Breaststroke and took nearly five-seconds off her entry time and was so close to breaking through the two-minute barrier.
11-yr-old Adam Young, only recently returned to training following a broken collarbone, produced several excellent swims, made the finals in every event he raced in and winning the Bronze medal in the ‘heat declared’ 100m IM. In the 100m Frontcrawl he picked up silver with a new lifetime best swim and in the backstroke final he set a PB and won Bronze. He was just pipped at the post for a medal in the 100m Breaststroke by Cupar swimmer Findlay Baillie but nonetheless set a new PB.
Findlay Baillie also made the finals of all of his events and in a thrilling closely fought race with Adam, he picked up Bronze in the 100m Breaststroke. He managed to swim PB’s in three of his five events proving that as well as being a strong Breaststroker, he also swims well across all the strokes. 11-yr-old Cameron Paterson raced in four events setting excellent PB’s in his 100m Breaststroke and Individual Medley making the biggest improvement of the day by taking 15 seconds off his Breaststroke time . In the 100m Backstroke, 11-yr-old Oliver Goad swam a storming first 25m to almost beat Adam Young to the turn. Oliver went on to set a new lifetime best of 1.32.56 in a controlled swim. Whilst his 100m Freestyle didn’t produce a PB, Oliver’s never say die attitude was there to see as he described his plans to do better next time round.
Ebony Sharp competed in the morning events and despite picking up a shoulder injury the previous day, she turned up to race showing a real can do attitude. Ebony went on to swim well and whilst not setting any new records, she really enjoyed the experience accepting that her injury had put an unfortunate dampener on her weekend. 10-yr-old Charlotte Williamson matched the feat achieved by the two boys by making the finals in all of her events and setting three lifetime best swims too showing real spirit in her races. Eve Hewitt also swam a blinder this weekend producing PB’s in all four of her races and also being a reserve finalist too for three of those events. Eve produced some thrilling races at the Club Sprints on Saturday morning and carried that enthusiasm forward into the DCA meet.
Fife clubs Step Rock and Burntisland were also at the meet and we sat together as a group and swimmers who know one another well from Fife Development and Fife Area Squad cheered one another along which was great to see.
My thanks to Julie Goad and Ruth Hewitt for timekeeping and to Eric Young for Judging during both sessions. Without our technical officials we wouldn’t be able to travel to galas, so their support is vital to the swimmers. A big thank you too for Karen Baillie who once again spent the entire day supporting me poolside and team managing the squad. Our final gala of the season is next weekend at Cumbernauld where our older swimmers race across 50 and 100m in all four strokes.
During the morning heats I was able to use my IPad for filming so that our athletes could see their races which was a great experience for the swimmers and allowed me to review their races with them as well as giving feedback.

Sunday morning saw our young swimmers return to the Novice League competition with round three at Carnegie Leisure Centre, Dunfermline. Nineteen swimmers raced throughout the morning with 19 out of 24 swims producing lifetime best swims. Swimmers who race faster than the cut off time for Novice League achieve a flash and this weekend we picked up a healthy seven speed flashes.
The morning started brilliantly with Jessica MacLeod picking up a flash with a great 25m Backstroke swim in the first event. Logan Manson then picked up a PB followed by first-time novice league swimmer Sophie Juskowiak picking up a flash and Rowan too swimming a super race for a flash.
The Breaststroke then followed with a number of swimmers racing to personal bests but no flashes here. Kate swam strongly in her heat and set a new PB. Isla and Rachel followed and they too both set excellent new PB times.
In the Butterfly everyone set a new PB, with Ebony Sharp, newly promoted to the Bronze Squad, swimming the greatest improvement of the day, taking nearly 14 seconds off. Scarlett and Oliver who were really excited about their races both won their age groups and set flash times too. Scarlett now has only one last flash to win.
The Freestyle also saw everybody swim a lifetime best with Hannah and Theo both racing strongly in the 25m. The 50m had Abigail Cousins swim a super-fast race to win a flash, Danielle took nearly ten-seconds off and she was suffering from a sore hand and Cameron finished off the Freestyle with the gala swim of the day, producing an eye-watering 36.42 swim to finish way ahead of the other fastest boys and secure a flash by nearly 7 seconds. Jessica then returned to the water, swimming 50m fly this time, and raced to a time very close to her PB. The 100m was the final individual event of the morning with Isla and Cameron picking up PB’s.
As per usual, the greatest excitement was reserved for the relay races at the end where our 9 and under girls swam into second place overall, our 10 and over girls A team, once again swam to victory with the B team placing 6th. The boy’s team had a great race and finished 4th overall missing out on 3rd by one-hundredth of a second!!
My thanks to the parents who undertook timekeeping duties and to Callum Ellis-Morton, Alan Cousins and Jane Staal for their assistance poolside. Back in the water with our last Fife Novice Gala of the year on May 11th at the Michael Woods in Glenrothes.

URGENT – Novice League – 27th April
I have just received an email to advise that warm up on Sunday at Dunfermline is at 9.00 am not 8.30 am as previously advised. Please be on poolside at 8.40 to register with the coach.
Also, as there are only 6 lanes at Dunfermline, the gala will run for a bit longer than previous Novice Leagues. We will probably finish around 12.30 pm.
Afternoon session will be later as well at 13:30.

EASTER SWIM CAMP PROVES A REAL SUCCESS
21 Swimmers from clubs across Fife travelled to Lochgelly during the first week of the holidays to take part in a four-day swim camp delivered by the Fife Performance Swim Squad.
Swimmers from clubs in Dunfermline, Glenrothes, Inverkeithing, Burntisland and Cupar spent four days working on their swim skills across all four competitive strokes coached by Cupar and District Head Coach Mark Laing, who also coaches regularly with the Fife Performance Swim Squad.
Cupar swimmers who attended were
• Scarlett Ferris
• Ben Staal
• Hannah Staal
• Grace Finlay
• Kiera Lorimer
• Isla Lorimer
• Adam Young
• Torin Ellis-Morton
• Theo Ellis-Morton
• Laura Brierley
• Abigail Cousins
• Inver Petrie
The camp had a Commonwealth Games theme and the first day saw former Scottish Swimming President, Gina Logan of Cupar, deliver an informative talk to the athletes about her experiences in previous games and she went on to outline the events that those attending the games can hope to enjoy.
Time was spent in the pool, the land training studio and in the classroom where swimmers completed their Commonwealth Games project work.
Interim Head Coach of Fife Performance, David Haig said:
“This swim camp follows on from the previous camp last year which was well received. Once again swimmers travelled to Lochgelly from across the county to improve their swimming technique and to take advantage of working with some of the county’s most capable swim coaches. The swimmers thoroughly enjoyed their camp and showed real improvement as the course progressed. We will be running a summer camp too and expect swimmers will be just as eager to attend this next course. I would like to thank coaches Fiona Bradford of Glenrothes and Forrest Hamilton of Cupar for their support throughout the course.”
Sheena Clements, Deputy Manager of the community facilities at Lochgelly High School, said: “We were delighted to welcome FPSS back to Lochgelly for another holiday swim camp. They conduct the vast majority of their swim training at our pool and during the camp they also made use of our sports facilities and classrooms too, allowing them to deliver a comprehensive programme from our Community Sports Hub where all of their requirements can be met.”

Swimming in spring holidays
Swimming continues through the spring holidays but there won’t be any land training during the two week school break: Monday 31 March – Friday 11 April.
Fees
Reminder for anyone who hasn’t yet paid the £17 club fees – these are due to be paid into the club’s bank account or at the club table by the end of April.
Just to clarify at the last AGM it was decided to split the annual membership fees that all swimmers need to pay: SASA fees – £33 were due in by the end of February 2014 and our own Cupar club fees of £17 are due by the end of April.
These membership fees are required to cover insurance etc to enable your child to swim and are separate from the monthly squad fees.
Any questions – just get in touch or ask at club table.
BIG THANKS to everyone who made club champs
A BIG THANKS to everyone who made yesterday’s club champs such a great success – whether you contributed to the delicious cakes, were poolside with a stop watch, ensuring all swimmers were ready to compete or there as a spectator cheering the swimmers on – thanks to you all! However, let’s admit it – the real work was being done by all our fantastic swimmers so a BIG WELL DONE to them for their behaviour, their attitude and of course their swimming.
Finally – this is an opportunity to thank all of our coaches for their commitment to the club and for supporting our children. This was evident yesterday in Mark Laing’s commentating that demonstrated an interest and knowledge of our children irrespective of their age or squad.
Back to business:

Club Champs results so far!
Round two of the Fife Leagues
Round two of the Fife Leagues saw swimmers from Cupar and District Swimming Club travel to Glenrothes to take part in another thrilling gala. Racing started with individual events, with 100m Backstroke the first stroke up. In the 11-14yrs category all of the girls swam fantastic lifetime bests, with 10-yr-old Eve Hewitt, in her first ever Fife Leagues gala, taking over eight-seconds off her entry time. 16-yr-old Nicola Howat finished 2nd in her age group after a strong swim in her heat. Cameron Paterson and Max Innes swam strongly in the boy’s event also setting new personal bests both placing 2nd in their age groups.
The 100m Breaststroke saw excellent swims from Rhiannon Laing and Ellen McQuilton setting impressive new times. 11-yr-old Murdo Denholm swam really well and placed 1st in his age group. 15-yr-old Ben Levy swam strongly to win his heat and take over seven seconds off and place 4th overall.
The 100m Butterfly had all four girls, Lucy Robertson, Lindsay Moncrieff, Rona Moss and Millie Buchan all setting personal bests with 11-yr-old Rona Moss taking a whopping 12 seconds off her previous time. Euan Baillie finished 3rd in his age group and Oliver Carter and Adam Young finishing 2nd in their respective age groups.
In the 100m Freestyle the club had eight swimmers racing who incredibly set a clean sweep of new personal best times with Kirsten Smith and Kerri Stalker particularly impressive taking ten and nine seconds off respectively. Kirsten was last season’s most improved girl swimmer in Fife galas. Both Findlay and Lewis Baillie swam new times and placed 3rd and 2nd respectively in their age groups. 15-yr-old Megan Wilson, who was club ‘Swimmer of the Month’ in February, swam a fabulous race in a time of 1.07.72 to set a new PB placing third overall in what was a thrilling race.
The nominated distance swim this time was the 200m Breaststroke with six swimmers racing. 11-yr-old Louise Moncrieff set things going with a six-second PB placing 5th followed by Kirstin Bousie who also swam a lifetime best race to place 4th in her age group. Findlay Baillie finished 1st in his age group and older brother Lewis in 2nd place following on from their Scottish Schools Finals races the previous week. On form Ben Levy finished off the individual swims with an outstanding race in the 200m Breaststroke taking almost 20 seconds off his time to place overall.
The gala finished with a round of Freestyle relays in which Cupar had entered six relay squads. The fastest time for a Cupar team went to the team of Harris Wingfield-Hayes, Nicola Howat, Euan Baillie and Ben Levy in a very respectable time of 2.06.28.
The attitude and commitment was first class from everyone with support given by swimmers to their team mates throughout the day. My thanks to Karen Baillie and Mark McQuilton for their help poolside and to Eric Young for officiating on behalf of the club.
The next Fife Leagues event is at Carnegie Swimming Pool on Sunday 27th April J

CUPAR SWIMMER WINS MEDALS WITH SCOTLAND
CUPAR SWIMMER WINS MEDALS COMPETING WITH SCOTLAND SQUAD
13-yr-old Oliver Carter, of Cupar and District Swimming Club, last weekend (1st/2nd March) travelled to Sheffield to compete for Scotland’s Disability Swimming Squad in the National Junior and Youth Swimming Championships.
Oliver was selected to the Scotland Squad last year and has recently become a member of the Scottish Talent Programme where athletes have been identified as possessing the potential to progress on to a British Para-Swimming World Class Programme within a two-year period or represent Great Britain on the world stage.
He competed in numerous events over the weekend with the highlight being his performance in the 4 x 100m Individual Medley relay where he raced the Butterfly leg with the team picking up a Silver Medal. In individual events, Oliver picked up a Bronze medal in the 100m Breaststroke much to his delight.
Speaking of the experience Oliver said: “Travelling with the squad to Sheffield was a fantastic experience. The facilities there were excellent and I enjoyed the opportunity to represent Scotland against teams from across the country. The relay race was truly exciting and I am extremely proud to have been part of the squad who secured the Silver Medal.”
Mark Laing, Head Coach at Cupar and District Swimming Club said: “Ollie is a swimmer who dedicates himself to his sport, possessing real drive and determination to do his best. His selection to the Scotland Squad is a reflection of how highly he is rated at national level and I am confident that last weekend is the beginning of a long and successful swimming career for him.”
At the Fife Disability Championships, held on Friday 7th March at the Michael Woods Centre in Glenrothes, Oliver competed in four races where he went on to win Gold in the 100m IM and 50m Fly and Silver Medals in the 50m Backstroke and 50m Freestyle to reinforce his position as one of the counties most talented up and coming disability swimmers.

RESULTS FROM EAST DISTRICT – BATHGATE
A busy weekend of competition at Bathgate with swimmers from across the East District competing. Every race for our Cupar athletes produced a lifetime best swim. Millie swam a very confident 100m Fly and then went on to achieve a Pb on her 100m Free too. Charlotte unfortunately was disqualified for a turn infringement, but her swim was strong and she swam in on a good time. Max was fantastic in each of his events, setting excellent new times and placing third in the Fly and second in the Freestyle. Albert took a whopping 22 seconds off his time in what was his first taste of East District competition. Our next East District events will return in October this year. Please come along and let the rest of our district see how well you can swim.

2014 Novice Leagues Information
The dates for this year’s Novice and Fife League events are set for the following:
Novice / Fife League 1 Sunday, 23rd February Warm up 8.30 am / 12.00 pm at Glenrothes
Novice / Fife League 2 Sunday, 16th March Warm up 8.30 am / 12.00 pm at Glenrothes
Novice / Fife League 3 Sunday, 27th April Warm up 8.30 am / 12.00 pm at Carnegie
Novice / Fife League 4 Sunday, 11th May Warm up 8.30 am / 12.00 pm at Glenrothes
Please let me know by Thursday, 24th January, 2014, if your swimmer(s) would like to be considered for the Novice or Senior League teams by return email to the address below. As this is a team league event, you will need to commit to as many meets as possible to ensure a “team spirit”.
The Novice League is an ideal event for young swimmers who have never taken part in galas before. The format is informal and friendly and is a good way to introduce swimmers to gala etiquette. For the 9 & Under age group, they swim 25 m in one stroke and hopefully will cover all 4 strokes over the four leagues. There is also a relay where they will swim 25 m in their allocated stroke. Each month, there is a nominated stroke and the swimmer for that stroke will swim 50 m.
In the 10-12 age group, the format is the same but each will swim 50 m and 100 m in the nominated stroke.
This is a great way to start achieving accredited times which can then be used to enter other galas. Parents are also expected to support the swimmers by helping out with time keeping, etc., and may be allocated a job.
The Fife (Senior) League is for more experienced swimmers with times that are too fast for the morning session.
Please let me know as soon as possible if you would like to be considered for inclusion in the Cupar team.

A long, hard weekend of competition saw our swimmers racing for the first time in 2014. Having been back to training for only one week, the swimmers were faced with the daunting task of competing in the 50m long course pool in Edinburgh. Having secured their qualifying times way back in October at Prestonpans, our swimmers went on to produce some outstanding swims accrediting themselves and the club positively.
Saturday morning had Catriona and Katie in the water doing 100m Fly long course which is a very challenging race. Both competed well and enjoyed the experience. The boys then followed in the Backstroke setting a clutch of personal bests leading to big smiles all round. The girls Freestyle was highly competitive with our swimmers placing well within their heats. The Breaststroke heats finished off the morning session with Max swimming close to PB and both Findlay and Lewis Baillie producing great swims with Lewis qualifying for the evening final ceded 6th.
In the afternoon Euan Baillie raced a thrilling 200m IM narrowly missing out on a PB. The boys relay teams produced two excellent races in both the IM and Freestyle leading to very positive coverage by the commentary team. The final of the 100m Breaststroke was an exciting affair with Lewis swimming even faster than his heat time to secure 6th place overall. The gala finished up around 7.45pm leading to a lot of swimmers sleeping in cars on the way home!!
Sunday morning had them back in the water at 9am with Club Captain Euan Baillie the first to race in the 100m Butterfly where he delivered a strong performance setting an excellent new PB. The girls Backstroke followed with confident performances delivered and a well-deserved PB for Katie Ross who won her heat convincingly. In the boys Freestyle both Adam Young and Lewis Baillie were on top form setting first-rate PB’s.
The afternoon saw the boys in for the 200m IM. Adam Young, once again, stepped up to the plate and reinforced his position as one of the most capable ten-year-old swimmers in the district by taking a huge chunk out of his PB and securing the last time that he needed to secure a place in this year’s Scottish Swimming District Regional Programme. One of the last races of the day fell to Max who moved strongly through the field in his race to deliver another club PB and finish his weekend off on a high note.
Overall this was a challenging meet for our swimmers who had enjoyed a lengthy break over the festive period. However, all of our swimmers showed their genuine talent and determination to do well, working hard to produce their best. This was the largest squad we have taken to the Royal Commonwealth Pool for many years and I’m hopeful that next year we will return with a larger, stronger and even more competitive squad.
