COLERAINE SWIMMERS EXCEL AT ULSTER CHAMPIONSHIPS

Coleraine Swim Team18th April 2016News

The top Ulster competition for age group swimmers took place last weekend in Bangor’s 50m pool. The Ulster Age Group Championships attracts only the elite of swimmers aged 17 and below, all of whom will have spent the season from September to April competing at various galas to gain a qualifying time(s) for this top flight event.

The event is run over 3 days and has heats in the morning and followed by finals in the evening.

Coleraine Swimming Club’s highlight of the weekend was a double Ulster Championship title for Molly Curry (13yrs) as she won her age group 100m breaststroke and 200m breaststroke. Winning the 100m breaststroke makes it 3 years in a row for Molly to gain the title of Ulster Champion at this distance and the second year in a row for her to be the 200m Breaststroke Champion.

Molly who is currently on the Ulster Performance Squad and Irish Youth Squad had to show grit and determination to retain both her titles. She narrowly missed a British ASA Nationals qualifying time last weekend and will go to the Irish Nationals in Dublin in a few weeks’ time with the focus of achieving a British time so she can compete in Sheffield over the summer as she did last year.

Shannon Baird (12yrs) competed in a cross section of events such as 100, 200 & 400m freestyle and 100 & 200m breaststroke. She reached top 10 placings in Ulster in all her chosen events and the highlight of her weekend being the bronze medal in 100m breaststroke when she took nearly 2 secs off her previous personal best time.

Matthew Curry (11yrs) competed in the 2 different distances in his preferred stroke – breaststroke over the weekend.  He won bronze medal in the boys 100m distance with a new personal best time having taken nearly 4 secs off his previous best time. He also was placed in the top 10 for his 200m race.

Other swimmers from Coleraine who competed at this event and gained top ten placing were: Albert Dallas – 15yrs (9th 200m & 7th 100m backstroke), Catherine Davidson – 14yrs (9th 100m breaststroke), Martin Fiala – 12yrs (8th 200m Freestyle, 7th 100m & 9th 200m backstroke, 10th 200m breaststroke and 9th 200m individual medley), Finn McEwan – 14yrs (6th 100m breaststroke) and Niamh McGarry – 11yrs (9th 100m breaststroke).

Congratulations to the rest of the swimmers from Coleraine who managed to achieve a qualifying time to compete at this event – Millie Dallas, Jake Ilsley and Paul Richmond who all swam very well and achieved many PBs.

Coleraine also had a few relay teams competing. There was a boys U12 team comprising of Jake Ilsley, Matthew Curry, Tom Curry, Martin Fiala and Paul Richmond. These boys came 7th in the medley relay and 6th in the freestyle. The relays are always very exciting and these were no exception with the boys doing many PBs in order to help their team be as well placed as possible.

There was a girls U14 relay competing in the medley relay. This team consisted of Millie Dallas, Molly Curry, Catherine Davidson and Shannon Baird. They came a very respectable 6th in a large field of female teams.

Well done to all the swimmers who competed at this event where hundreds of the best age group swimmers from throughout Ulster have competed for Ulster titles, medals and PBs. The Coleraine swimmers did their club and themselves proud and thanks must go to those parent volunteers who helped run the gala without whom the Swim Ulster structure would collapse.

COLERAINE SWIMMING CLUB ULSTER FINALISTS

Coleraine Swim Team8th April 2016News

With the Swim Ulster Age Group and Youth Championships this weekend Coleraine Swimming Club are proud of their 13 club members across the various age groups who have made individual qualification times to these Championship finals to be held in the Olympic sized 50m pool in Bangor. There were also a further 2 swimmers who also had times to represent Coleraine as part of a relay team.

To achieve qualification times for these events is very difficult and the competition is very high with hundreds of children per event and age group vying for the coveting place in the Swim Ulster Championships.

Last year Coleraine Swimming Club had 10 swimmers at this level of competition and it is very encouraging for the volunteer coaches to see the numbers this year increase.

We would like to wish all the CASC swimmers good luck as they represent Coleraine in the highest level in Age Group competition.

PARENTS AND OPEN GALAS

Coleraine Swim Team29th March 2016News, Parents

It is a condition of the club’s entry to open galas that we provide volunteers to assist in the running of the gala.

The roles are varied: programme selling; timekeeping; stroke and turn judges; marshalling; recorder etc.

It is therefore a condition of entry with Coleraine Swimming Club that if a swimmer enters an open gala they agree that they will provide a volunteer for at least one FULL session in one of the required roles.

It was agreed at the last committee meeting, that non -coaching parents would be expected to take on these roles at open galas. Coaches will no longer be carrying out these roles.

To ensure fairness it was decided that parents of children with most entries / events will be expected to do more than those with children only swimming a few events. The committee are hopeful that parents will be able to work this out themselves rather than the swimming club allocating names. The committee have agreed to keep this under review.

This decision is in line with other swimming clubs and Coleraine Swimming Club see this as an area that non-coaching parents can contribute to the club.

With that in mind, Swim Ulster are running a FREE Officials Course in Bangor Aurora on Sunday 3rd April from 9.30am – 3.00pm (email [email protected])

The committee therefore ask that parents make the effort to attend this upcoming training event (or future events).

Thank you for your ongoing support

GETTING INVOLVED

Coleraine Swim Team10th March 2016News

We have an urgent requirement for coaches and helpers in all sessions, particularly the Monday 5.30pm/6.15pm/7pm sessions.

You may not have any experience in coaching swimming, so why not help out the existing coaches, by being a poolside helper? Courses are available also, which the Club will fund. You may not be able to help out every session, but any help is appreciated

Coleraine Swimming Club is a successful swimming Club, operated only by unpaid volunteers.

We can only continue to be successful and to offer a service to the community, if we have the continued support of parents.

Unfortunately at the moment, The Club operates under the Pareto Principle, the 80/20 rule, which means that 80% of the work involved, is performed by 20% of its members.

We need you as parents to help more with your Club. It is your Club, it is the swimmers Club.

At galas, we also need help. Some of you are fantastic at helping out at timekeeping, but it is the same parents helping out each time. We have to ask/beg for each gala, and it is getting harder and harder to persuade parents to help. If you are already there, why not help out? There is nothing more frustrating for the Club in seeing parents hiding in the balcony. Why sit in balcony, get involved.

There is a real danger that if we can’t secure the involvement of parents, then sessions will be cut and galas may not be able to be run.

So please, for the sake of the Club, for the sake of the swimmers, get involved.

There is great satisfaction to be gained from helping the kids especially when you see their improvement over time.

WARM WEATHER TRAINING CAMP – TENERIFE OCT HALF-TERM 2016

Coleraine Swim Team17th December 2015News

The Club is proposing to organise a warm weather training camp and holiday in Tenerife during October Half-term 2016. This is initially open to swimmers in the 8pm Monday session, but may change dependent on numbers.

The camp may be 5 or 7 days, to be confirmed. The cost is estimated to be no more than £500 per swimmer (slightly less if 5 days), including flights, transfers and half-board accommodation. A deposit of around £150 would be needed in early January to cover the booking of flights, with the balance being paid off at around £50 per month. Some fundraising may be undertaken to help with costs.

The camp will involve daily swim training and planned activities, including a trip to Siam Park (waterpark). The swimmers will also have a significant amount of free time. Accommodation will be probably 2 people per room, half-board. Should be some fun in the sun!

We need expressions of interest/intent asap so that we can firm these plans up. Please e-mail [email protected] to confirm your interest, indicating if you would prefer 5 or 7 days. You will then be kept informed before a final decision is required, although that is likely to be quite soon.

Coleraine were represented at the Irish Masters in the National Aquatic Centre, Dublin on Saturday 17th October 2015, by youth and experience with James Walton (current Senior Squad) and Club Coaches Rhodri Jones and Gavin Eakin.

Elite Triathletes James Walton and Rhodri Jones displayed some good form in the men’s 200m Freestyle finishing 1st (2:04:89) and 4th (2:26:66) in their respective age groups. Gavin Eakin powered his way to 4th (32:28) in a competitive 50m Butterfly final just missing out in a medal. Gavin, a former Ulster schools 50m backstroke champion, again narrowly missed out on a medal in 50m Backstroke. James displayed his class in the 200m IM taking gold in a superb time of 2:21:33.

There was some world class swimming on display with London Olympian Barry Murphy and his NC Masters team mates setting a new national 200m IM relay record. In the afternoon session the Coleraine swimmers continued to show they were a force to be reckoned with, Gavin finishing 4th (37:29) in the 50m breaststroke and 6th (28:30) 50m Freestyle.

In the highly competitive 100m Freestyle Rhodri managed 5th (65:09) and to round off a successful day James had the fastest swim of the day in the 50m freestyle (26:64) to take another gold back to Coleraine.

Congratulations to the guys who did their club proud in their first ever masters event and all made the qualifying times for the European Masters Championships in London next year.
