DEVELOPMENT GALA 3 SUCCESSES

Coleraine Swim Team12th March 2019Events, News, Parents, Swimmers

Well done to Fionnan, Kayla, Erin, Ola, Kioni, Freya and Kirsten who represented the club at last weekends Swim Ulster Development Gala in Newry.

It was a very early start and a long day, but all their hard work, training and focus is clearly coming to fruition with fantastic swims by everyone. There were numerous exciting moments as coaches, swimmers and parents shouted, screamed and jumped up and down as they cheered our swimmers on! The entire team made our club, themselves and their parents very proud!

Fionnan Duffin gained Gold for his first place in the 12-year-old boys 100m Freestyle and another Gold in the 200m Freestyle; he did so with impressive personal best times in each event and in his 100m Backstroke.

Freya MacFarlane added to the medal haul with a fantastic 2nd place Silver in the 13-year-old girls 100m Breaststroke and hit her qualifying time for the Swim Ulster Qualifying Galas in the same event. She also gained a PB in her 100m Backstroke race.

Kioni Little had an amazing day gaining two Golds in the 11-year-old boys 100m Freestyle and 100m Backstroke, plus a Silver in the 100m Breaststroke. He also added to his success by gaining two qualifying times and is now eligible to compete in the Swim Ulster Qualifying Galas.

All our swimmers made significant improvements to their Personal Best and Seed times with some huge improvements like Kayla and Kioni dropping over 15 seconds, and Kirsten, Freya, Ola and Fionnan dropping between 6 and 12 seconds!

Finally, our youngest swimmer, Erin swam a fantastic 100m Individual Medley which required perfect turns and her head to pass the flags on each turn for her to pass the Swim Ulster Skills Assessment, which is a prerequisite, alongside qualifying times, to enter the Qualifying Galas and she smashed it!

Thanks also goes to Sharon Tea and Stephanie Hodge who kindly supported the club by timekeeping and turn judging. Without our parents support we can’t enter these galas, greatly appreciated!

SWIM ULSTER AUTUMN QUALIFYING MEET 12TH – 14TH OCTOBER 2018

Coleraine Swim Team25th October 2018News, Swimmers

On the weekend of the 12th October 2018, 7 Coleraine ASC swimmers travelled to Lisburn for the Swim Ulster Autumn Qualifying Meet.
Head Coach, Ben Wiffen, was poolside for our swimmers each day of the meet. He said “It was a proud moment for the club and for me personally, when I was standing poolside at one of the pre-session warm-ups and I had a team of seven swimmers in the water – all of whom I have worked with over the past 2 years and seen graduate from not even entering external competitions to now chasing qualifying times for National Championships!!!”

Ben continued, “It was also great to see the swimmers approach the race with the correct mindset of:
What do I need to do to succeed in this event? Rather than, I am going to succeed in this event – without a clear plan of how, they were all very focused.

It was great to see swimmers grow in confidence by entering new events out of their comfort zone and have confidence in their own ability! Kyle Cooper entered the 50m fly and took over 6 seconds of his BP and Charlie Eatwell took over 5 seconds off his 100 IM time which was a fantastic swim for both boys!”

The club would like to congratulate Jake Ilsley who gained his Ulster Short Course Championships time at the event. Congratulations also to Isla McClelland who broke the clubs 10 and under 50m freestyle record and gained a bronze medal and to Charlie Eatwell also brought home a silver in his IM.

A great start to the qualifying season!

Congratulations Isla on breaking this record so early in the season is a fantastic result – hopefully many more records to come.

1ST PTL OF 2018/19 V LECALE

Coleraine Swim Team27th September 2018News, PTL

Coleraine ASC kicked off their Provincial Towns League season on the 22nd September 2018 with a home Gala against Lecale ASC from Downpatrick.

The first Gala saw some excellent swims from a strong Coleraine Team with almost every swimmer obtaining a Personal Best at one stage of the competition, which is fantastic at this stage of the season!

Lecale ASC however also had a win in their sights for the first gala of the season and pushed Coleraine to a very tight gala where Coleraine emerged winners with 584 points to Lecale’s 560.

A special mention must go to Kevya Bovaird, Emily Boyle, Mairi Clements and Ruby Cochrane who all swam up an age group to support the senior team and gained PB’s and points for the club in the process.

Jake Ilsley, Eva Jones, Daniel Eakin and Lily Jones won 4 of their event races and contributed strongly to their respective relay teams also.

Coleraine ASC would like to thank all of the Parents and friends who supported this event and Lecale ASC for a super competition.
