Double-down Distance triumph for Master Carroll

James MacTavish

Fresh (as much as anyone can be!) from a phenomenal 25k power swim at the Vidosternsimmet Distance event in Sweden only a week before, Open Water Masters swimmer Fiona Carroll (30-34yrs) travelled to the South Coast of Wales to partake in the British Open Water Championships. A slick 3km distance through the waters of Aberdovey - practically a sprint for the Sotonian at a brisk 42mins - saw our first Masters Open Water Champion ever.

Not content with that alone, Carroll made it a true long weekend with a follow up distance swim of 13km over the same course, the Internationally recognised Aberdovey Challenge, again, placing first. To put into context, a total of 16km racing pace...640 lengths of our beloved The Quays swimming pool - and a fair bit chillier also!

Open Water swimming has become increasingly popular post the COVID-19 lockdown, with several events springing up over the South Coast. For  other CSSC Club members, of any age, interested in learning more about such events be sure to check the British Swimming Open Water website.
