Lead Coach:  James MacTavish

Masters Squad is for swimmers aged over 25 who wish to gain better health, better fitness or make new friends and possibly compete at Masters Competitions here at City of Southampton Swimming Club.

Whilst previous club training experience is preferred, the squad tries to encompasses a whole range of abilities from casual fitness swimming to highly organised competitive swimming. The Masters squad has approximately 60 members. We have three dedicated sessions at The Quays per week, with the training program set by the Head Coach David Terry conducted under James MacTavish.

Along with other members of the squad, you will have the opportunity to take part in a range of competitions throughout the year.  During the past year members from the squad have very successfully competed at the County, Regional and National Championships and been selected to represent Hampshire in Inter-County events. There are also a number of social and training events organised throughout the year.

The objective of this squad are:

  • To enable swimmers to train at a lower level of time commitment
  • Compete at Masters Competitions with distinction.
  • To promote swimming and better health.

The objectives of this squad are in line with the ASA Long Term Athletic Development plan:

Stage 6 –  Retaining

For swimmers that have withdrawn permanently from mainstream competitive swimming, but wish to maintain staying within the competitive swimming community.  Masters Squad will enable swimmers to use swim training to relax, readjust to non-competitive swimming, retaining swim skills and compete at Masters Competitions if they so desire.

Basic training schedule

An example is available here.

Additional sessions will be included where necessary and programme is subject to change.

Masters Squad swimmers have the option of training once, twice, three or four times each week.
