County Record broken at Club Championships

A long awaited weekend, and our first two days of the Club Championships certainly did not disappoint!

With over 100 smiling and excited athletes in attendance, there were some fantastic close races with spectators in the stands on their feet more than once to cheer on all of the swimmers to a superb finish.

We kicked off our racing with the Mixed 200 IM, and the very first heat got the crowd on their feet as 9 year olds Connie and Ellie fought tooth and nail to the finish. In the 400m Freestyle, 11yr old George won his age group after a fantastic race, while the top 2 in the 12yrs (Kenny & Joe) were only separated by 0.05 seconds! The girls were just as close as Lucie, Megan and Jessica pushed each other to the finish, all three finishing in best times, congratulating each other on their racing!

Our final two races were certainly dominated by the final heat, as Luca De Zilva won both the 100m Butterfly and 50m Backstroke. His 100m Butterfly was a fantastic exhibition of how to race 100m Butterfly Short Course and quite rightly drew a few gasps from the excited onlooking swimmers.

But to cap of a fantastic first day, our remaining spectators and athletes were treated to the breaking of a Leicestershire County Record!

Luca De Zilva, winning the 50m Backstroke and breaking a Senior Males County Record which had stood since December 2000 by 0.3 seconds, finishing in a time of 25.69.

A fantastic finish to our first day of the meet.

Our second day started as our first finished, with our youngest competitors (7 & 8 years of age) took their place on the starting line in the 25m Breaststroke. Izzy M took the victory for the 7 years, while Hollie, Izzy D, Elsie and Iris all battled well in the 8 years, with Hollie taking the victory in that particular event.

In the 100m I.M., the 13yrs age group was won by Tommy by only 0.02 seconds from his teammate Luke, while the 9 year olds Sophie and Connie were separated by only 0.04 seconds. It was also fantastic to see our Pre-Pups athlete Yaochen compete in her first event of the championships, finishing in 6th! It was a fantastic event to start the meet, with 29 girls racing in the 10 & 11 years age groups and another two Club Records being broken in the final heat, as Luca De Zilva once again dropped under 1 minute to finish in 59.16 for the 18yrs & Open records, and Alex Keeble breaking the 16yrs record in 1:01.68.

Our two heats of 1500m were both super exciting to watch. 12 year old Jessica in heat 1 fought from start to finish to drop under 20 minutes for the first time, as she touched in 19:43.31, while heat 2 saw a brilliant fightback from 15yr old Luke as race winner Alex almost lapped him at 1000m, but Luke never gave up and refused to be beaten/lapped, eventually completing his first 1500m and winning his age group in 17:46.84, only 30m behind the race winner.

Going into the 100m Breaststroke, 9yr old Rory and 10yr old Jacob were separated by only 0.01 seconds in their fight for the race win, while in the 13yrs age group, Bianka and Hope were involved in a great race, and could only be separated by 0.04 seconds. The open winners in this event were Jack (1.11.87) and Abby (1.14.56).

In our remaining 6 races, 5 Club records were broken!

In the 50m Butterfly, it was Luca De Zilva, who once again broke the 18yrs & Open Club records in 25.35.

The 200m Freestyle saw some phenomenal races. Connie and Ffion were only separated by 1 second in the 9 years age group. The 11 year old girls, Anais & Alice battled to first and second, while Ananya only grabbed 3rd place from Abigail by 0.07 seconds! 13 year old boys, Tommy only beat Luke by 0.17 seconds, while 15 year old Luke only touched 0.56 seconds ahead of 16 year old Will. It was Luca who once again broke the 18 years Club Record in the 200m Freestyle (1:57.85), while 16 year old Alex also dipped under the 2 minute barrier for the first time in 1:59.61.

In the 50m Breaststroke, it was 11 year old Kenny who broke the 40 second barrier and the Club record for the first time, taking one of the oldest club records on our books in the process in a time of 39.79.

In our final 7/8yrs race, It was Izzy D who broke the 2 minute barrier for the first time, to win the race, while 7 year old Elsie broke the 100m Individual Medley Club record from 2019 in 2:14.39.

Our final race of the weeked was the fantastic 200m Butterfly! It was fantastic to see so many 10/11/12 year old girls and boys racing this event for the first time, and 11 year olds Billy and George were brilliant all the way to the finish, with Billy overtaking George on the final 25m to win the event in 3:24.21. The final heat also held great viewing as Luke and Alex renewed their rivalry from the 1500m Freestyle, with Luke coming out on top on this occasion, winning in a new best time of 2:21.71.

What a fantastic weekend of racing from all the swimmers, and we cannot wait for our final day of racing on Sunday 3rd October!
