Sharks victorious in Round 1 of Arena League

How good is it to be back!?!

Almost two years since our last league gala and Leicester Sharks were back with a bang with all of that stored up energy released and in full flow at Abbey Stadium, Redditch. Athletes, supporters and coaches were all in full voice from the moment the teams were read out in lane order to that final touch in the Mixed 16/over 4x50m Freestyle relay. It was electric!

All Arena League galas consist of 42 events including Male/Female 100m events of each stroke for 12/13yrs, 14/15yrs and 16&over athletes, 50m events for Male/Female 11 yr athletes, an Open 200m I.M. & eight 4x50m Relays (two per age group), one each of Medley & Freestyle events.

As a team in division one, the gala was naturally very competitive and after the opening round of 200m Individual Medley and brand new Mixed relay events, Sharks took an early lead, but were closely followed by City of Hereford, City of Coventry and hosts, Redditch.

As the individual events came into action, the next 11 events were nip and tuck, with City of Coventry taking the most victories and retaking the lead, with Sharks and Redditch in hot pursuit as we approached the 21 event half way marker. In the second half of the gala, our sharks hit the accelerator, winning 13 of the final 21 events including 3 of the final 4 mixed relays and taking the overall points victory with 196 points, with hosts Redditch in second place (181 points) and City of Coventry only one point further back (180 points) in third.

We were very pround to see all three of our core values, Respect, Responsibility, Unity, on show as each of our athletes remained until the very end to cheer in their teammates and applaud all of the teams as the final results were read out.

With round two on the horizon, which will take place on Saturday 13th November, and the draw expected to take place later this week, Leicester Sharks have used up all of the time allotted for celebration, and are now fully focussed on working hard into the coming months to ensure we can improve and progress before December's final round.
