Potters Bar Swimming Club

About Potters Bar Swimming Club

PBSC was formed in 1968 and trains at the Furzefield Centre in Mutton Lane and at The Venue in Borehamwood. The club is a competitive club with around 340 members that caters for swimmers from five years upwards of all abilities, from learn to swim to those competing in national events, and Masters. The club also merged with Hertsmere Flyers in October 2016 (see link for the History of Herts Flyers). We have two head coaches - One for the Junior Section, and one for the Performance section.

Every year we have many swimmers that qualify for the County & Regional Championships as well as swimmers that have attained qualifying times for East Region, British, Scottish, Welsh and Irish National Championships too. We have a strong masters section that enjoy competing, training and a good social. Our Masters compete up to World Championship Level.

The club is affiliated to Swim England, the Swim England East Region and the Hertfordshire Amateur Swimming Association.  The club is also a member of the Herts Swimming League and The National Arena Swimming League. We compete in the National Arena League Division 1 (London) as well as swimming two teams in the Herts Major and Peanut Leagues each year

We have always been one of the leading clubs in Hertfordshire and have produced many quality swimmers who have gone on to win titles at county, regional and national events.  The most notable amongst these being Caroline Cooper, who whilst a PBSC swimmer won Commonwealth gold in the 100m butterfly and Sarah Price, Olympic finalist, commonwealth double gold medalist and world record holder, who started her swimming career at Potters Bar. The Club is proud of our masters swimmers, two who have a made an impact on the world stage - John Cunningham, became World Masters Champion in 2010 having won the 100m Butterfly in Sweden, and 50 & 100 Fly in 2012, and won the 100 Fly at the Europeans in 2022 . John is also the holder of numerous Irish National records, and a former European record holder. Daryl Mason also wone the World Masters Games in the 50 free, and held a number of British records.

James Woodward, Jessica Woodward, Ben Harrison, Morgan Newman, Georgina Tallon, amongst others have all started at PBSC, and have been at GB Nationals, finalists and medallists - we are proud of our heritage!

Training or teaching sessions take place seven days a week, current times are on the website and the noticeboard on the balcony at Furzefield.  Occasionally it is necessary to vary these during school holidays, bank holidays, pool closures or to fit around galas.

Swimmers are divided into squads and groups based on ability and fitness, movement between these is decided by the coaching staff.

We are always on the lookout for new members so why not contact us to arrange a trial, or just get more information.
