Potters Bar Swimming Club in Hertfordshire has an exciting opportunity for a Swimming Teacher to join our Learn to Swim team.


Potters Bar Swimming Club is a competitive and friendly Club affiliated with Swim England. Established in 1968, the Club provides swimming opportunities for young children through to masters. Over the years, the Learn to Swim section has been crucial in helping young children learn to swim and develop their swimming technique in order for them to go on and join the competitive swimming squads. Over the years, the Club has developed many swimmers to achieve great success and go on to compete in county, regional and national events.


The Learn to Swim Teacher will build on our continued growth at the Potters Bar Swimming Club Learn to Swim section. The new candidate will be expected to deliver safe, consistent swimming lessons that give children between the ages of 5-12, confidence in the water. We expect the new candidate to be someone who is very willing to help out, work well as a team member and form effective working bonds with other teaching colleagues at the pool. The successful candidate will enjoy supporting children to achieve their potential, ensuring that all lessons are adapted to the strengths and needs of all pupils and to use a range of teaching techniques to engage and support them. The new candidate should maintain a good relationship will all pupils, while setting high expectations which inspire and motivate younger swimmers. Behaviour management is another key skill needed in order to create a safe learning environment, which encourages and praises children. The Learn to Swim teacher will work along side other dedicated teachers, and may be given the opportunity to work with and support newly qualified teachers or other young people on the Duke of Edinburgh scheme.


The successful candidate will be reliable and be able to support the ethos of Potters Bar Swimming Club. Candidates will preferably be ASA Level 2 or Level 1 qualified or equivalent.



The Role


Responsible to/ Reporting to: Potters Bar Swimming Club Learn to Swim Coordinator



Hours: 1 hour per week. Our Learn to Swim session is held at The Furzefield Leisure Centre in Potters Bar, every Friday 6:15-7:15pm.



Main Responsibilities:

  • Work along side and support the other Learn to Swim Teachers
  • Provide cover when required
  • Be a positive role model, creating a positive environment in which to motivate and encourage the swimmers and parents participate in swimming
  • To be a good role model to new teachers and to younger people carrying out the Duke of Edinburgh scheme
  • To be reliable and attend all Learn To Swim sessions
  • To be prepared and ready for lessons, to ensure equipment is put out and put away correctly



  • Level 1 or Level 2 Swim Teacher
  • Very good communication skills (with children mainly, but occasionally may need to speak to parents about pupils progress)
  • Very good time management skills
  • Previous experience of working with young children in a swimming capacity
  • Lifeguard qualification (desirable, but not required)
  • Understanding of health and safety in a swimming pool environment
  • Understanding of safeguarding when working with younger children
