HST – Update

It is an incredibly busy and challenging time for HST and we recognise that both swimmers and parents will have a multitude of questions.  This communication is an attempt to answer some of those questions and also provide insight into the huge amount of activity that has been recently undertaken to progress our situation.

Base PDC/IASC Head Coach Role

After several weeks of negotiation neither party were satisfied to move forward to full contract.  Although disappointing news, we were preparing for the likelihood of an extended transition period and will now initiate the existing plans to strengthen HST with immediate effect.  During this time we have been in full dialogue with IASC and understand similar support arrangements are being sought and will be subject to separate communications.

HST Training Programme Continuity

In November, we engaged Phil Potter (Head Coach of Heart of Midlothian) and Gordon Glasgow (Head Coach of Swim West Lothian) to assist us through this transition period, both are based out of Edinburgh and provide HST with support remotely with the occasional visit.  Over the past two months, Phil and Gordon have visited HST to build their understanding of the environment and implement mechanisms to assist our HST coaches and athletes.  They are providing session content and support for the on-deck coaches as well as being available to support programme/session planning beyond the dedicated HST sessions.

For ease of operations;

Phil is the point of contact / support for Lochaber, Thurso, Wick.

Gordon is the point of contact / support for Inverness, Nairn, Tain and Grantown.

These support arrangements are flexible and will remain in place till the HST committee is assured that the new HST Base and Regional coaching positions are operating as expected.

Please discuss any HST support requests you may have with your Club Coach and they can raise as appropriate.

Local Base Coach Support - Morag Mitchell

We recognise our immediate challenge of covering Base HST sessions and a number of steps have been put in place to avoid over-stretching our much-appreciated volunteer coaches.  We have been working with Scottish Swimming to secure additional coach support and from this Monday, Morag Mitchell will be assisting the PDC team to deliver Base session through part of the week.  Morag has been head coach of Carnegie, one of Scotland’s strongest age group clubs and involved in the national squads setup for a number of years, so is a tremendous addition to the HST team.

Training Weekends

The next Training weekend is the 8th/9th February and will follow the same format as previous weekends providing development opportunities for Swimmers, Coaches and Parents.  Gordon has confirmed his availability to support the Feb training weekend we had been waiting on a few of the items above to settle prior to issuing dates for the remain training weekends of the year, these will follow in due course.

Improved Communications

It’s fair to say communications have been limited of late, however we have recently implemented a new club management system, Team Unify, which provides us with the tools to improve this situation.  In the near term, we will use the system to provide regular communications and in future we expect to streamline our administrative processes and make things a bit clearer and simpler for team members.

We appreciate your patience as we work through these array of significant changes but if you have any further questions please email us [email protected] and we will attempt to respond as quickly as we can.
