How to Join Inverclyde Amateur Swimming Club

Swimmers Coming from Swimming Lessons

All swimmers interested in joining the club must register and go through an assessment. To arrange an assessment please contact our Membership Secretary, Sarah Jones by e-mailing [email protected]  When you make contact about an assessment then you require to provide the following information:

Swimmers Name, Age, DOB, Mobile No., Contact Phone No. and Other Information e.g. the level the swimmers is currently at in swimming lessons.

Typically a swimmer should be 7 years old and be at swim skills 4 or Club Ready level at swimming lessons however we will consider swimmers who are 6 years old if they have attained the above levels in swimming.

Assessments take place on a regular basis and at least once every 2 months. Once you e-mail Sarah this will be acknowledged and she will contact you with an assessment date and time. Please note this may not be straight away but she will endeavour to get back to you within 3 days.

The assessment itself lasts about 30-45 minutes and will consist of the swimmer spending time in the 20 metre pool trying out all strokes and using a kickboard. Swimmers do not require to be competent in all strokes but must be proficient in at least 2 out of the 4 strokes and be able to swim 25 metres. The assessment is carried out by the Head Coach or another Coach at the Port Glasgow swimming pool.

If after the assessment the swimmer is at a suitable standard for joining the Club you will be asked to register online, there is a 2 week trial which costs £15 which will be taken electronically on completion of registration. The squad the swimmer will join will depend on their skill level and endurance however, most swimmers making a transition from swimming lessons tend to be placed in Club Start Squad. The swimmer can train up to 2 times per week and it gives parents/guardians and swimmers an opportunity to see what the club is like and what is expected of them. In addition, it provides the coaches with a period of time to assess the swimmers progression.

A swimmer’s progress is discussed at coaches meetings which take place on a regular basis. If at the end of the 2 week period, the Coaches are satisfied with the progress made then the swimmer will be offered the opportunity to conclude to full membership of the club and online membership will be finalised, at this point the Annual Membership fee (which includes Scottish Swimming and West District membership fees) will be due and instructions will be given for payment of monthly training fees. Full information can be found in our membership pack

Swimmers Moving from Another Club

Swimmers who are with another club and request a trial at IASC will be invited along for an assessment which will involve training with a relevant squad. It is the parents/guardians responsibility to inform the current club of your request to trial at IASC. This will be acknowledged within 3 days and the Head Coach will agree the date and time of the assessment.

There will be a 2 week trial with the cost being the relevant squad fee for that period of time. Thereafter, the same process as with swimmers coming from swimming lessons will be followed however additional paperwork will be required to be completed when changing clubs.
