Inverclyde Amateur Swimming Club (IASC) returned to top flight competition for the first time since 2019 in the Scottish National Age Group Championships (SNAGS) at Tollcross. After a 2 year enforced break due to Covid, it was wonderful to see the best swimmers in the country come together and battle it out to be crowned Scottish champions. It’s a marathon of a meet: 5 days of competition; 17 individual events for 5 different age groups and 18 relay events. Oh, and around 30 finals each evening as well! For IASC...

One minute it feels like a marathon – the next minute it’s over. How can something feel like it’s been going on forever yet be over in the blink of an eye? Sport is funny like that. SNAGS is the biggest and most important competition in our calendar – and a swansong for some (we’re not ready to deal with that yet). We’ve laughed, we’ve cheered, we’ve cried and (after some parental cajoling) we’ve smiled on the podium. We’ve gone through it all in 5 short – yet long –...

What on earth was in the water in Inverclyde today? Hands down, our most successful SNAGS day ever! 1 gold, 3 silvers and 1 bronze; 9 individual finalists and PBs by the bucket load. It’s official, IASC were smoking hot today! Once again Archie McArthur ended the afternoon in style taking home the gold in the 400m IM and setting the club up for our very own super Saturday. Well done Archie! First up in the evening finals was Aimee Watson in the 200m IM. Aimee held her own well...

The sun has set on Day 3 of SNAGS and we’re over the halfway point now. From here on success is as much about mental strength as physical strength. Do our swimmers have what it takes? Well Archie McArthur gave us a silver in the afternoon in the 1,500 free, so it was looking good. Could we add to it? YES WE COULD! Archie was up first again in the evening finals, this time in the 50m free. In the ‘splash and dash’ it really can be a free for...

Day 2 has come to an end, and once again it didn’t disappoint. To be fair, the club entered the evening with an afternoon gold from Archie McArthur in the 400m free, so we were always going to be happy! But still, there was no letting up on expectations for our 4 evening finalists: Aimee Watson, Archie, Luke Garrity and Matthew Garrity. Aimee had a strong swim in the 200m breast. She challenged for medals throughout the contest but in the end our speed queen was bettered by the distance...

Phew – is it really only the end of day 1? Did we really just crown a new Scottish champion; claim a silver and 2 bronzes and see some amazing performances? Yes we did, and here’s how it happened. First final of the evening was Archie McArthur in the 100m backstroke. Archie qualified as 3rd seed, and swam his fastest ever time in a strong final to claim the bronze. Well done Archie! Next up was the 200m breast and our trio of Luke Garrity, Lewis Gray and Matthew Garrity...

It's almost here! Bags are packed, passes are printed and snacks are organised. It's almost time for #SNAGS2022 and we're as excited as kids on Christmas Eve! We’ve put together this handy guide to who is swimming what and when. With 98 swims – not counting any finals we might make – there’s a lot to keep up with! For those who are new to the world of SNAGS, the 15+ age groups swim in the morning, the 11-14 age groups in the afternoon and finals in the evenings for...

Last contested in 2019, Wednesday 13th April will finally see the return of the Scottish National Age Group Championships (SNAGS) the pinnacle of the competitive calendar for Inverclyde Amateur Swimming Club. It’s another record-breaking year for the club, with 18 athletes entered in 100 individual events and a further 3 swimmers competing in 7 relay events. It’s been a long wait for Matthew Garrity and Aimee Watson to defend their titles. Matthew is the defending age group champion in the 100m and 200m breaststroke. He was also fastest Scot in...

Who's excited?! All entries have been processed and unfortunately there were a few scratches for the team. However, we’re delighted to say we still have a record-breaking number of swims and swimmers this year: 20 swimmers; 91 individual swims and 7 relay teams. A huge well done to April, Betty, Peter, Honor and Oliver who still achieved times in another 9 individual swims. Check the pictures for our #SNAGS2022 team.

We’re back! After 170 long days, IASC got #backtothewater this week with a splash. With the Waterfront pool in Greenock opening on Monday, we’ve been able to get all of our squads in for at least one training session. As every swimming club knows, there’s been a huge amount of work to get to this point. We’ve all been on a huge learning curve and had to become experts in risk assessments, COVID symptoms and COVID prevention measures. This week, there’s been excitement, nerves and a few bumps along the...
