6 swimmers make the YDS & DRP 2020 squads

Congratulations to our super six swimmers who’ve been selected for the Scottish Swimming Youth Development Squad and District Regional Programme training camps for 2020.

Aimee Watson and Matthew Garrity have both been selected again for the Youth Development Squad after another year of top-level performances and results.

Last year Luke Garrity was the club’s sole representative for the District Regional Programme. This year, he’ll have the company of Mirren McConnell, Archie McArthur and Cameron Beck, all three of whom have been selected in their first year of eligibility.

The District Regional Programme (DRP) is for swimmers aged 11-14. To make the grade, swimmers must demonstrate all-round ability by achieving at least four qualification times. One time must be for a 200m+ event and one time needs to be in a non-freestyle event. The programme is the first step on the ladder towards the national squads and aims to further the development and education of young swimmers.

The first of this year’s training camps will be held virtually, but we’re hopeful that at least one of the later training camps will be in the pool.

Head Coach Shirley Reford said “It’s great to see the next generation of swimmers making it into the Scottish programmes, especially given the difficult circumstances we have faced with the broken pool floor and then Covid closing the pools. Each one of the six has worked so hard, I’m so proud of them all.”

Congratulations to all six of our swimmers – it’s great to have some positive news to celebrate!
