Solid start for Brompton SC in the 2018 National Arena League

Bram Montgomery

Facing very strong competition, including 3 of the top 4 teams in the division, Brompton SC managed to move up on our seeding (and my own expectations) and place 5th overall in the 1st round of the 2018 National Arena Swimming League. Although we were without a few of our key swimmers, those who did represent the team on Saturday swam very well and had a ton of fun cheering on their teammates late into the night.

Our swimmers placed in the top 3 in 20 of 50 race and we took home wins in 5 events including the Girls 10-11 4x50 Free Relay, Senior Boys 6x50 Free Relay, and individual wins from Mia (10-11 50 Free and 50 Fly) and birthday girl Isla (14-15 100 Fly). Mia and the other 10-11 girls (Anabelle, Trixie, and Maybelle) were our biggest point winners on the night adding 3 runner up places (Anabelle in the 50 Back and 50 Breast and the 4x50 Medley relay) to Mia's two victories.

The coaches feel the swimmers have a lot of room for improvement with small mistakes costing us points in a number of races, but were still very happy with the 15 individual lifetime bests as well as improvement on 2017 results in 11 of 16 relays. Meets in the first half of the season are meant to be learning experiences and should help our swimmers learn about their strengths and weaknesses so they can get back to training and continue to improve.

The other clubs and coaches around the poolside certainly noticed our 16&Over swimmers racing tough in their training trunks. We do this as it gives us a big boost later in the season both physically and psychologically knowing that when we have our racing suits we will be much faster.

A big thank you to Bob, David, and Ruhksana for representing the club as officials and to Ramtin and Emma for their excellent coaching on the night. The 2nd and 3rd rounds of the competitions take place as always on the 2nd Saturday or November and December so please ensure that if your swimmers is called upon to race for the club they will be ready to go!
