Strong Performances at the London Winter Champs

Bram Montgomery

A group of 30 Brompton SC swimmers punched well above their weight while competing in the 2018 London Winter Championships that took place last weekend at the Olympic Pool in Stratford. By the end of the 2 long days of competition, our swimmers left the pool deck with 20 medals and 13 new Brompton Club Records. 50% of our swims were lifetime bests which is an excellent feat for a mid-season competition.

Brompton finished 8th in the published Top Club table, but if you take into account the fact that many of our top swimmers had to represent their previous clubs (a rule that will be changing from 2019), Brompton actually finished 3rd overall behind County powerhouses Ealing and Camden.

Showing good depth we had 10 different swimmers contributing to our medal count (George, Balthazar, Gina, Andrew, Alesha, Pixie, Izzy, Alex, Emily, and Sophie) as well as a further 7 swimmers who qualified for and competed in the championship finals of their respective events.

Overall it was a step in the right direction for the club and our older swimmers, but we still have a lot of work to do over the next 6 weeks as we head to the end of season meets. Some lazy habits were still evident and the fitness levels of some of our swimmers needs to improve if they hope to reach their potential.

A big thank you to our coaches Ramtin and Jorge who were an invaluable help on deck for myself and the swimmers.
