Hitchin Open Meet a great step for Brompton SC swimmers

Bram Montgomery

With end of season competitions in sight only a few weeks away, 60+ Brompton SC swimmers approached the Hitchin Open meet with the goal of making small improvements and using the meet to assess weaknesses that need to be addressed as we approach December. The coaches were pleased with the overall effort and focus of the swimmers, many of whom were racing events for the first time, and the results showed the club is making some of the improvements required to raise our level.

Our swimmers were ever present at the awards desk, collecting almost 200 medals from our 272 swims with Saint (9 Golds), Kynan (6 Golds), Marc (5 Golds), and Zoe (5 Golds) leading the charge towards our winning the Top Visiting Club Award. Over 140 lifetime bests were achieved on the day and 3 new club records were set by Greg (Boys 14-15 200 Free), Mia (Girls 10-11 50 Back) and Charlotte (Open Girls 50 Back).

Despite all the success it was still obvious that the fitness level of some of our swimmers is not where it could be as we struggled in some of the longer races due to lack of training. As a club we have a long way to go before we are competing with the top clubs in the region and this is not down to a gap in talent; most of our swimmers need to show a higher level of dedication if they want to reach their potential.
