West District RD1

A huge well done to all our North Ayrshire swimmers who were competing at the first round of the West District Short Course Championships at Tollcross on 5/6 February. Over the course of the full weekend our swimmers brought home 8 golds, 5 silvers and 7 bronze medals. We also had an incredible 47 top 10 finishes. At West District Championship events they have team points and if swimmers finish in the top 6 in their event, they contribute towards these. At the end of the Sunday afternoon session, we had finished a fantastic second place in the team rankings.

There were many positive aspects to the weekend with some swimmers competing in their very first West District competition, some competing at Tollcross for the first time and some picking up their first ever West District medals. The performances of both Evie Chan and Lewis Gibson were very impressive as they collected 9 medals between them. 12 year old Evie Chan won 3 gold medals and 2 silvers from her 5 races and 14 year old Lewis Gibson won 4 gold medals from his 4 races.

The most pleasing aspect of the weekend for the coaches was seeing so many of our Junior swimmers in particular racing on the “tougher” events that they had possibly not raced competitively before such as the 200m Butterfly, 400m Freestyle, 400m IM and the 1500m Freestyle.

Keep up the good work North Ayrshire, roll on Round 2 in a couple of weeks!
