West District Pentaqua Meet 15/16 January 2022

Derek Cowie

It was a fantastic start to 2022 for the North Ayrshire swimmers competing at the West District Pentaqua Meet at Tollcross on 15/16 January. The 14 years & over were competing on the Saturday with the 5 events being 100m of each stroke and 200m IM. Adam Currie, Heather Stuart and Isla Waller were our three competitors on the first day and made the most of the opportunity to race. Of the 13 races between them, they had 10 best times which bodes well for the rest of the season.

On Sunday, it was the turn of our 13 & under swimmers who were racing on 50m of each stroke and 100m IM. There were 16 swimmers racing on the Sunday and it was pleasing to see not only plenty of best times but excellent skills on starts, turns and finishes and a focus on warming up and recovery between races.

Given there was reduced capacity at this event, it was pleasing to see healthy numbers at this gala, especially in our younger age groups. There was an overall age group prize of £40 for each age with the winner decided by the highest points accumulated from competing in the 5 races.  North Ayrshire had 2 swimmers win the top prize. Huge congratulations go to Lewis Gibson in the boys 13 years age group and Ruby McInnes in the girls 11 years age group. We had a further 7 swimmers finish in the top 10 overall points in their age group and as a team, North Ayrshire finished with the 3rd highest points total of the 27 clubs competing. Well done North Ayrshire, keep up the good work!
