Newmarket Swimming Club Race to Tokyo July Challenge

Newmarket & District Swimming Club SMASH the July Challenge for Newmarket Open Door Charity

The challenge involved swimmers and families walking, cycling, running, kayaking, swimming, horse riding and playing tennis the distance from Newmarket to Tokyo and back again in the month of July.

By the end of the challenge we had travelled just under 20 000km which was an amazing achievement. It also brought the team closer together during what has been a really tough few months out of the pool. It gave us a real purpose before the pools reopen in August and helped keep in touch with all the swimmers by posting daily photos of our achievements and bringing the team closer together by supporting a really good cause. Team activities included a river swim in the Cam and a scavenger hunt in Newmarket to find some of Newmarket’s landmarks such as Hyperion and the Clock Tower.

The team managed to raise £2259 for Newmarket Open Door Charity. Charles Dore, CEO commented ‘This is a wonderful example of fundraising by our local community for the benefit of our local community. The money raised will help benefit our residents, to help provide the support and training needs to enable them to move on to live independent lives. A huge thank you to Newmarket Swim Club’.

Newmarket Swim Club are looking for sponsorship in our back to pool recovery plans. If anyone would like to become a sponsor, please do get in touch with Tamlyn Barber 07769 267681.
