NER Postgame

Mike Perry

“And just look where you’re standing” a conversation towards the end of two long days; eleven and and a half and eleven respectively; and actually, yeah, take a look around. This is the North East Regional Short Course Championships at the great Ponds Forge International! Here’s the best the North East has to offer in ages 11, 12, 13 and 14 years plus the open swimmers (15+).

We all prepare in our different ways. To taper or not to taper; the red racing suit or the blue; just how many snacks do I need; then eventually we arrive. It was so nice to see so many people on day one and get a sense of team right from the off. Ponds Forge is a grant pool to be sure and we took up our places in the balcony proudly before dispersing into a rotations of warm ups. Then, we were off.

Two pools operate at the same time for this meet. An age group pool with swimmers 11-14 and an open pool with swimmers 15+. It’s a tricky beast to handle; but Martyn took the lead on the age group side and Mike on the open side. Of course we all watch both pools and quite often flit between two separate races with seconds to scribble a few notes before resetting a stop watch and having at it again to see what the next battle with time and position will unveil.

Let’s talk about process and outcome goals.

An outcome goal is a time, a medal, a position. Something you achieve as a result of your swim.

A process goal is something you do to achieve an outcome goal. So, pb on this 100 free - outcome goal.

Keep my head back on the backstroke - process goal.

Feedback is important! Being able to think about your swim retrospectively is important and only through reflection can we really honestly make things better. So when your athlete comes back to the coaches for post race we go through how was your swim, what went well, what can we do better and then give some specific observations about what we the coaches think. Your athletes were complete professionals.

Don’t get me wrong we know who’s just getting through that conversation to hear the letters P and B, but they do it. They think, the speak, the learn and they come back stronger each race.

Athletes; each and every one!

The end of a meet is always a tricky one. At the end of two long days; rattling through 50s free is very much appreciated, but there’s an element of, ‘aww; it’s over’. Fortunately it won’t be that long until we hear of county qualifying times and then onto the long course NERs.

There ends the North East Regional Short Course Championships for 2021. Your swimmers did you proud.
