Durham City Winter Gala

Mike Perry

This morning we had the Durham City Winter Gala held at the stunning Freemans Quay Leisure Centre in Durham’s city centre.

This meet is a great opportunity for some of our younger membership to lead the way and show us what they can do over 50m of out and out speed.

We had a great and very festive turn out with many of the volunteers wearing Santa hats, Christmas jumpers and even one or two beards.

With the older swimmers being out of the water for the early morning racing, some of them turned their hands and experience to officiating by shadowing some of our seasoned white shirts. Such a lovely way to support our younger swimmers to do what they love.

To finish off the morning’s activities a distance time trial was put on for our older swimmers. The girls 800m and the boys 1500m free. There aren’t a great deal of opportunities to swim these events so it’s good to have so many updated times and to see people that wouldn’t call themselves distance swimmers giving it a go.

A huge thank you has to go out to all of the volunteers from today for making the meet run so smoothly; to Freemans Quay for being fabulous and keeping us all safe; and to our coaches and parents that put in hard work all year round to keep our athletes on top of their game.

The biggest and most important thank you, however, is for the swimmers that are Durham City Aquatics.

Great work everyone, can’t wait to see you again for the Valentines Meet.
