Lead by head coach Greg Ient, the team work closely to develop swimmers and the environment to meet the rising standards of the club. Information on training sessions and squads can be found on the training page.

Although the coaches request that they are not approached on poolside during training, you can get in touch with members of the team via the club email address nasc@nasc.co.uk. However you can catch up with the Head Coach before or after training sessions. A summary of the coaching team can be downloaded for easy viewing Coaching Team

Greg Ient - Head Coach

I started my career in swimming at another North Yorkshire based club, Thirsk White Horse Swim Team (THWST), where I trained under some very dedicated and quality coaches that took me to Yorkshires, NER’s and Nationals by the age of 15. THWST did me great favours in the sport and introduced me to my passion of swimming. THWST were a dominant force to be reckoned with especially in league and county based competitions which regularly saw medals and podium finishes.

Throughout the time being coached I started to get myself involved helping on poolside and passing on advice and technique to those who were aspiring to be the next best. I was introduced to numerous poolside helpers and coaches who helped guide me into the role of coaching and teaching in the sport from the age of 13. When I turned 16 the club invested in me to become a swimming teacher, which opened a new avenue in my swimming career.

From becoming a swimming teacher at Hambleton Leisure Centre, I developed skills and a reputation that saw me make the jump once again to helping on poolside but this time at Northallerton ASC after taking a break from coaching. Working for the council and clubs in the past 6 years it has allowed me to see how the transition of swimmers should be developed for the long term. I am now a Level 2 Swimming Teacher and Level 3 Swimming Coach.

Northumbria University, studying Sports Coaching Bsc(Hons), has enlightened me into the use of models or practice and research informed coaching. This has allowed me to start to guide the coaching team at Northallerton ASC into modern day practice that allows for optimal performance and enjoyment at the same time. My philosophy as a coach has also changed while studying after reviewing current drop-out and burn-out rates across sports in this country. Research informed practice is now a high priority of mine for coach education in the area. I am currently working between the Allertonshire School and Northallerton College as part of the support team working mainly in PE and Sixth form activities.

I currently coach based on the following philosophy developed through 9 years of working in both teaching and coaching environments;

‘Success is for the long term benefits and rewards, therefore it is essential that athletes are progressed according to ability and age considering making their training enjoyable and purposeful’

I see my role at Northallerton ASC as a developing one, the club has moved forward from where it was in 2009/10, the coaching team now needs mentoring and training as it prepares for the next big venture in the clubs history. Its links with the Moors Swim Squad and other local teams grows as does its reputation within the area. The next task is continuing the massive retention the club has and improving both its participation and performance aspirations.

Karen Ient – Assistant Head Coach

For the last 15 years I have breathed swimming through my 2 boys Greg and Glen who both went onto compete at high levels in a multitude of sports especially swimming.

I was involved with the swimming club as a poolside helper generally chaperoning and supporting children at swimming galas while I was working for Barclays Bank and Kirkby Fleetham school.

I recently had a change in direction with work and completed my swim teachers course. This secured me employment  with Hambleton District Council  as a schools swimming teacher.

I now assist Greg on poolside Friday and Sunday evenings.

“I have swimming coursing through my veins, growing up right on the coast at Spurn Head one the bleakest parts of the UK the sea became my second home.
