NASC Squad Structure

Northallerton Amateur Swimming Club provides a comprehensive training pathway for its members, it is aimed to provide progression throughout the scheme aiding swimmer development.

Below are the training squads; details are provided into the aims, entry criteria and progression criteria. Simply click on the squad name to find out more

Otters

Individuals are advised to continue swim scheme lesson to help with progression.This squad is our entry point for many swimmers. The squads main focus is working alongside the NPTS lessons offered within Hambleton District council to assist in the swimmer development.

The groups main aims are;

  • Stroke Technique
  • Introduction to competitive starts and turns
  • Develop spatial and kinesthetic awareness in the water
  • Develop a passion for swimming through a TGFU drills and skills framework

Entry Criteria

  • Swimmers must have achieved the minimum of the NPTS stage 5 to gain entry into the scheme
  • An initial assessment from the Swimming Teachers and Swimming Coaches at NASC will provided

Progression Criteria

  • Swimmers must have achieved Club Award 1 and NPTS stage 7 as assessed by NASC to progress to Otters (2)
  • Otters (2) are offered additional training to provide the bridging to the main Junior Squad. They must have achieved Club Award 2 to progress

Competition

  • Swimmers in this squad can attend low level competitions (Level 4) to assist coaches in planning for progress and also to gain exposure of the swimming competitive enivronment.
  • Swimmers may also be asked to compete at inter club events such as Moors League and Hambleton League Galas
  • Swimmers are expected to attend the annual Club Championships series

Swimmers in this squad have the following training offer to assist with their progression within the sport. NASC have an expected equipment list for swimmers in each squad. All squads are led by qualified coaches and teachers who have attained accredited awards, coaches are usually supported by assistants and volunteer poolside helpers.

Junior Squad

The majority of swimmers in our scheme are in Junior Squad. The squads main focus is to develop specific SwimSkills inline with the Athlete Development Support Pathway (ADSP, formally LTAD) model adopted by British Swimming.

The groups main aims are;

  • Stroke Technique
  • Further develop to competitive starts and turns
  • Further develop spatial and kinesthetic awareness in the water
  • Introduction to competitive swimming
  • Swimming endurance and speed are developed using a progressive model, encouraging enjoyment and participation. These skills allow swimmers to develop the basic energy system needed in the sport.

Entry Criteria

  • Swimmers must have achieved the NPTS stage 7 award to progress into this stage. This will be assessed by NASC Coaches and Teachers to ensure consistency within the scheme
  • Swimmers will have achieved the Swim England Club Award 2

Progression Criteria

  • Swimmers throughout this stage will work towards the Club Award 3 and Club Award 4. Upon securing these awards swim assessments will be conducted within training sessions
  • Swimmers must be active in competing to be considered to move into the development squad framework
  • A swimmers age and development will be considered when looking at progression from this squad

Competition

  • Swimmers in this squad are expected to attend low level competitions (Level 4) to assist coaches in planning for progress and also to gain exposure of the swimming competitive enivronment.
  • Some Level 3 competitions may also be identified as suitable for participation
  • Swimmers may also be asked to compete at inter club events such as Moors League and Hambleton League Galas
  • Some swimmers may qualify for County competition during these early years. Your swimming coach will inform you of the next steps
  • Swimmers are expected to attend the annual Club Championships series

Junior Development

The squads main focus is to develop specific SwimSkills inline with the Athlete Development Support Pathway (ADSP, formally LTAD) model adopted by British Swimming. The athletes in this stage will be starting to gain skills allowing them to progress into the Training to Train of the ADSP.

The groups main aims are;

  • Competitive Stroke Technique
  • Consistent application of competitive starts and turns
  • Further develop spatial and kinesthetic awareness in the water.
  • Introduction to dry side conditioning and RMAP warm ups
  • Develop competitive skills by competing at League, Open and County level
  • Swimming endurance and speed are developed inline with the Training to Train outcomes of the LTAD

  • Swimmers will be selected from Junior Squad based on attainment, attitude and competitive outcomes

Progression Criteria

  • Swimmers throughout this stage will work towards the Club Award 5. Upon securing these awards swim assessments will be conducted within training sessions
  • Swimmers must be active in competing to be considered to move further and remain in the development squad framework
  • A swimmers age and development will be considered when looking at progression from this squad

  • Swimmers in this squad are expected to attend competitions, as identified from the fixtures calendar, to assist coaches in planning for progress and also to gain exposure of the swimming competitive environment.
  • Swimmers may also be asked to compete at inter club events such as Moors League and Hambleton League Galas

Senior Squad

The aim of the Senior Squad is to enable each of its members to achieve a high level of skills and competency through progressive and structured training cycles aimed at competing at a high level within the sport. Swimmers will also be educated in all 5 pillars of swim training (physiological, psychological, lifestyle, nutrition and tactics). it is hopes that their training performance will enable them to reach higher levels in competitive swimming.

Entry Criteria

  • Swimmers progress into this squad usually from the development squad pathway, usually DS but occasionally DJ
  • Some swimmers may join this training squad from other clubs if they have demonstrated technical and competitive outcomes at other clubs.

Progression Criteria

  • This is the highest level which the club offer, swimmers will be retained in this squad until further opportunities for progression become available
    • University
    • Life Long Participation
    • Movement to a larger scheme to support talent identification pathways from British Swimming

Competition

  • Swimmers in this squad are expected to attend competitions, as identified from the fixtures calendar, to assist coaches in planning for progress and also to gain exposure of the swimming competitive environment.
  • Swimmers may also be asked to compete at inter club events such as Moors League and Hambleton League Galas
  • Most should qualify County competition during these early years. Your swimming coach will inform you of the next steps
  • Some swimmers may qualify for Regional competition during these early years. Your swimming coach will inform you of the next steps
  • Swimmers are expected to attend the annual Club Championships series
