Become a Coach

Nothing quite beats the thrill of a competitive race. Swimming coaches develop the skills and technique of swimmers to help them achieve their full potential. It’s no wonder why so many swimmers decide to become coaches after calling time on their competitive careers.

But it’s not just former swimmers – there are plenty of Scottish swimming coaches with no previous experience of competitive swimming. What they all do have however, is an unrelenting drive, competitiveness and will to be the best they can be.

What's involved

Coaches help their swimmers to grow and develop their swimming technique and skills.

A swimming Coach has an understanding of speed swimming techniques, a basic understanding of appropriate corrections to common faults and be able to deliver a series of effective training sets.

Qualifications

There are 3 levels of qualification.

The first level of qualification (UKCC Level 1) focuses how and what to coach. Once completed, coaches are qualified to actively support a more senior qualified or licensed coach at any level, in the delivery of a pre-prepared session. You must be 16+ years of age at the start of the course.

To coach on your own, you will be required to hold a UKCC Level 2 qualification.  This qualification will provide you with the skills and knowledge to effectively plan, prepare, deliver, monitor and evaluate coaching sessions. You must be 17 + years of age before the course begins.

The UKCC Level 3 qualification is only available for Coaching Swimming and is the route to becoming a senior coach.  It will enable you to plan, implement, analyse and revise annual coaching programmes to get the most out of your athletes. You must be 18 + years of age before the course begins.

Costs

The Club will pay for all costs and coordinate with grant applications associated with your training but require you to sign an agreement to deliver a minimum of one coaching session a week for a year, otherwise the costs are reemburseable to the Club.

Typically, costs are UKCC Level 1 £300 & UKCC Level 2 £600.
