PNSC Squad Criteria

Performance Pathway

National Squad

Squad Objectives

Full time youth and senior swimmers for whom swimming is their highest priority outside of educational commitments. Swimmers whose aim is to compete at the highest level with total commitment to an individually agreed training programme with the Head Coach. Swimmers will be targeting the Home Nations Summer Championships, British Summer Championships, British Championships (trials) and International competitions and should be prepared to do “all that it takes” to reach the highest levels of the sport

Squad Entry Criteria

Attendance:

  • Consistently attending 90-100% of training sessions in previous squad
  • Consistently attending 90-100% of target competitions in previous squad
  • 100% commitment to team events (National Arena League, County/Regional/National relays)

Performance:

  • Athletes must have achieved a ranking in the Top 48 in the age groups specified at the Swim England National Summer Meet & British Summer Championships
  • All athletes must have times recorded on British rankings (or International equivalent)
  • Proven ability and commitment to following a competitive training programme (swimmers, with parental support)

Attitude:

  • Has demonstrated a high level of dedication to the sport
  • A strong desire to listen, learn & act upon coach feedback
  • A very high level of self-motivation to improve
  • A positive mind set with the ability to take personal responsibility for performances, attitude and attendance
  • A team player – polite, supportive, caring and empathetic

Consideration:

  • Head Coach’s discretion. Swimmers assessed by the Head Coach to have near term potential and or having longer term potential may be admitted or retained within a squad on a probationary period of 3 months. The swimmer must be able to show commitment and demonstrable progress towards the overall squad criteria

Squad Training  & Competition Criteria

Attendance:

  • Athletes must attend a minimum of 8 pool sessions per week and 2 land training sessions
  • 100% attendance to individual key sets as identified by the Head Coach

Performance:

  • Has a full understanding of training cycles and sessions; able to take full personal responsibility for their efforts in training sessions in line with the expectations of the Head Coach
  • Consistently hold required times on pace work, for a range of strokes and distances
  • To improve stroke specific skills, looking for marginal gains
  • To target finals and achieve medals at Regional &/or National Championships (long course and short course)
  • To achieve places at Regional &/or National programmes, International trials and/or be selected for Regional teams
  • To reach top 48 British ranking for targeted events

Attitude:

  • Takes total responsibility for self-development, following the individual  programme set by the Head Coach
  • Takes personal responsibility to communicate directly with the Head Coach or supporting coaches
  • Expected to take holidays at appropriate times in the year so not to disrupt training into key meets
  • Swimmer-led goal setting with action plans for achievement (regular record keeping of performance against goals with regular 1:1 review with Head coach)
  • Follows the squad’s strength and conditioning programme
  • Educated on and follows good nutrition & hydration
  • Continuous desire to perfect technical skills
  • Takes responsibility for injury prevention (pre-hab & stretching)
  • Knows how to prepare mentally for racing (e.g. using visualization techniques) & how to overcome & learn from disappointment
  • Adherence to the PNSC Code of Conduct at all times

Squad Exit Criteria

  • Unable to attain the relevant attendance, performance and attitude standards as set in the squad criteria
  • Consistently late to sessions without agreement
  • Training at other clubs or seeking additional coaching/technical sessions outside of the Head Coaches Planning or without their consent

Pathway

  • Not meeting criteria - A move into either Senior Performance, Senior Competitive or  Masters Performance if age appropriate

 

Senior Performance

Squad Objectives

Full time youth and senior swimmers for whom swimming is their highest priority outside of educational commitments. Swimmers whose aim is to compete at the highest level with excellent commitment to an individually agreed training programme with the Lead Coach. Swimmers will be targeting Southeast Regional Championships and the Home Nations Summer Championships.

  • Athletes must have achieved qualification to a minimum of one Olympic event at a Regional Championships
  • All athletes must have times recorded on British rankings (or International equivalent)
  • Proven ability and commitment to following a competitive training programme (swimmers, with parental support)

  • Has demonstrated a high level of dedication to the sport
  • A strong desire to listen, learn & act upon coach feedback
  • A very high level of self-motivation to improve

Junior Performance

Squad Objectives

To compete at Regional level & above with very good commitment to the programme. Swimmers will be targeting the Regional Championships and potentially English Summer Nationals. Swimmers should aim to reach the highest levels based on their ability and commitment levels

Squad Entry Criteria

Attendance:

  • Consistently attending 75-100% of training sessions in previous squad
  • Consistently attending 75-100% of target competitions in previous squad
  • 100% commitment to team events (National Arena League, County/Regional/National relays)

Performance:

  • Athletes must have qualified and competed in a minimum of 4 Hampshire County Championship events or equivalent in the previous season (Olympic Event)
  • All athletes must have times recorded on British rankings (or International equivalent) for all events
  • Proven ability and commitment to following a competitive training program (swimmers, with parental support)

Attitude:

  • Has demonstrated a good level of dedication to the sport and attendance in previous squads
  • A desire to listen, learn & act upon coach feedback
  • A high level of self-motivation to improve
  • A positive mind set with growing  ability to take personal responsibility for performances, attitude and attendance
  • A team player – polite, supportive, caring and empathetic

Consideration:

  • Lead Coach and Head Coach’s discretion. Swimmers assessed to have near term potential and or having longer term potential may be admitted or retained within a squad on a probationary period for 3 months. The swimmer must be able to show commitment and demonstrable progress towards the overall squad criteria

Squad Training  & Competition Criteria

Attendance:

  • Athletes must attend a minimum of 6 pool sessions, to include 2 early mornings and a minimum of 1 land training session per week

Performance:

  • Must display an attitude to improve in all strokes and events
  • To target finals and achieve medals at County, Regional and/or English National competitions (long course and short course)

Attitude:

  • To develop greater individual responsibility for swimming commitment and performance
  • To develop and improve knowledge around nutrition/hydration and its application during training and competition
  • To understand the importance of time management, healthy lifestyles & competition protocols
  • All athletes must display an attitude, commitment and lifestyle which indicates that competitive swimming is of a priority to them outside of academics
  • Athletes will be expected to take holidays at appropriate times in the year so not to disrupt training into key meets
  • Adherence to the PNSC Code of Conduct at all times

Squad Exit Criteria

  • Unable to attain the relevant attendance, performance and attitude standards as set in the squad criteria
  • Consistently late to sessions without agreement
  • Training at other clubs or seeking additional coaching/technical sessions outside of the Lead Coaches Planning or without their consent

Pathway

  • Not meeting criteria – a move into either Intermediate Competitive or Senior Competitive
  • Exceeds performance levels – possibility for a move into Senior Performance
