Pre- Season Focus Clinics for Competitive Swimmers



Team Bath AS is running a series of pre-season clinics for competitive swimmers over four days in August, giving 9-16 year olds the change to hone skills, technique and technical knowledge in time for the 2019/2020 season.


Run by Team Bath AS Head Coach, Chris Alderton and Team Bath AS Lead Development Coach, Liam Willcox, each clinic will have a different focus offering swimmers the flexibility to target skills by attending single or multiple days.



The Program is as follows:-




Saturday 24 August

Stroke Technique Clinic with Guest Olympic Silver Medallist

Registration 8.45am, start 9am to 12pm


1-hour workshop- ‘How Body Positioning Can Improve your Swimming?’ presented by Chris Alderton and a Question and Answers session with guest Double World Championships Gold Medallist, Olympic Silver Medallist & Double Commonwealth Gold Medallist Chris Walker-Hebborn.


2-hour Pool session focusing on improving your stroke technique for all four strokes.

In addition, Chris Walker-Hebborn will be providing demonstrations and there will be a chance for photo opportunities.

Preparing Your Body for Competitive Swimming

Registration 9.15am, start 9.30am to 2pm


1-hour workshop including warm up exercises and how to prevent injury, examples of pre-pool exercises, activation in the pool, importance of good nutrition, sleep and tips to stay well throughout the season.

Additional session of Land Training by Team Bath AS Strength & Conditioning Coach, Mike Muckelt.

2-hour pool session focusing on appropriate warm up routines, learning and understanding new swimming drills and the use of equipment to improve both training and racing.



Monday 26 August

Positive Mindset, Positive Training

Registration 10.15am, start 10.30am to 2pm


1-hour workshop covering ‘The Impact of Positive Mindset’, covering personal growth, confidence, motivators, life balance and wellbeing. This will enable you to work out how you get the best from your training and competitions.


2-hour pool session covering underwater phases, plus how to improve your starts, turns and finishes. Understanding the breakout phase how learning how to master it. All essential skills for developing competitive swimmers.



Tuesday 27 August

Becoming a Champion: Training and Race Tactics

Registration 10.45am, start 11am to 2.30pm


1-hour workshop focusing on ‘Goal Setting’ for the new season including: How to set long term and short-term goals; breaking them down into outcomes, achievements and improvements; reviewing, evaluating and adjusting your training and racing.


2- hour pool session focusing on understanding Training and Race tactics including awareness of stroke length, race pace, negative and even splits and how good pacing and breathing can improve your swimming.





About the Coaches:


Chris Alderton, Team Bath AS Head Coach

Chris joined Team Bath AS as Head Coach in 2017 and set about bringing the new approach to training and team culture to life. Utilising his experience as a swimmer and passion for personal development, Chris has driven the introduction of pioneering personalised training and created a dynamic program utilising the wealth of expertise in sports science and athlete development available at the University of Bath. Chris is also part of UK Coaching’s Performance Foundation Coach Support Program and Head Coach for the Somerset Inter-County Team 2019/2020.


Liam Willcox, Team Bath AS Lead Development Coach

Liam joined Team Bath AS in 2019 with a career that had already taken him to some impressive places both at home and abroad – he was assistant Coach to the Somerset County Team (2016/2017), the Inter Regionals Team 2018, for the South West Disability Team at the British Swimming Para International and Rio Trials as well as coaching on Swim England’s Talent Development Camps. His previous employment includes 2 years coaching at Millfield School.

Swimmer Entry Criteria

Clinics are open to swimmers aged 9-16 years who are confident swimming competently for a 2 hour pool session.

Swimmers should have already competed during this season at L3 competitions or above and be current ASA Cat. 2 members.


Price and Booking


Places on each clinic are £45 per swimmer.
