Joining Maxwell

Maxwell Swim Club is the top competitive swimming club in the Aylesbury Vale. Our professional coaches work with swimmers of a range of abilities from swimmers leaving the Swim England Learn to Swim programme to international standard at both our Aylesbury and Buckingham training bases.

Maxwell follows the Swim England Athlete Development Support Pathway for Swimming in order to develop its swimmers to their maximum potential, creating talented swimmers at all levels including swimmers attending County standard events, Regional standard events, Nationals and International events.

Maxwell operates on three major squad groups further divided into individual squads. These groups include our Maxwell Academy including our Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum squads. Swimmers progressing from the Swim England Learn to Swim programme enter our Academy and begin their transition into a club atmosphere there. Swimmers learn key, fundamental aquatic skills and further develop their skills prior to moving into Platinum where they will begin the stage of 'learning to train'.

Transitioning from our Academy, our swimmers move into the Age Group squads starting in the Junior Development squad where they further develop skills and key aspects of training through the 'learning to train' stage of the Support Pathway. Swimmers begin to experience basic aerobic training at this stage which is then further developed and becomes more intensive with additional training methods and regimes in the County and Regional squads. By this point swimmers are at the 'training to train' stage of their swimming pathway where they further develop specific skills through a range of specific regimes and drills whilst also increasing fitness levels. We also have squads in our Age Group for swimmers who either do not meet the competitive pathway squad requirements, for swimmers who do not wish to compete or for swimmers who wish to continue to compete and train but on a reduced amount.

Upon leaving the Age Group via exiting the Regional squad, swimmers progress into the Performance squad group which is divised into Junior Performance and Youth Performance. Swimmers begin to come to the end of the 'training to train' stage of their swimming career, moving onto the 'training to compete' stage after becoming older with potential in Youth Performance to move onto the 'training to win' stage of the support pathway at higher ages. Swimmers are aiming for National and in some cases International events in these squads.

If your swimmer is ready to leave the Learn to Swim programme or equivalent swimming lessons based on having been in stage 5 or above for a while, being aged 6 to 9 and being able to confidently swim 50m of front crawl, 50m of backstroke and 25m of breaststroke, you can arrange a trial with our Academy. Your swimmer should also have a basic understanding of butterfly and dolphin kick.

The Joining Process

Swimmers already training or competing

If you have already left the Swim England Learn to Swim programme or swimming lessons of equivilent and you have continued to develop your fitness and skills through swim training, depending on your age and swimming ability, you could be ready to join one of our Age Group squads or our Performance squads if you are planning to move from another club from swimming at a high level aiming for Nationals.

If you are aged between 9 and 12, and you have experience as a competent swimmer, you can arrange a trial session with us in one of our Age Group squads based on your ability which we will discuss with you prior to a session. Our professional coaches will analyse your capability in the pool at your trial session, will give feedback and potentially assign you to a squad if both you and the coach are happy.

If you are aged between 12 and 18 and you have experience swimming either in a club training setting or you are an enthusiastic and confident swimmer, we might be able to offer you a trial session in either one of our Age Group development & competition squads or one of our Age Group or Performance squads on the main competition pathway. If you are already training at another club with your current group or squad aims and objectives being Counties and Regionals, we may be able to offer you a trial session in our County or Regional squads. Or, if you are already training at another club with your current group or squads aims and objectives being Nationals, we may be able to offer you a trial session in one of our Performance squads.
