British Swimming Selection Trials - Day 4

Simon Shaw

Day 4 at the trials was all about SPEED and that’s certainly what we got from Yusuke Legard as he ripped up the water and the Club Record book and placed himself 2nd to British Record holder, Ben Proud.

Yusuke Legard

Yusuke (who trains predominately in the USA at Pinnacle Swimming, Virginia Tech under the tutelage of Sergio Lopez and his team) demonstrated that he was in fine form to not only PB in the heat, but to move it on again in the final.

With a stunning PB of 22.10 in the final, Yusuke broke the WDSC Club Record held since 2005  by Wycombe Swimmer and Olympian Simon Burnett a previous British Record holder. Simon trained ay wycombe in the early to mid 2000’s under Head Coach at the time Bob Pay . His freestyle times including the 22.12  for the LC 50 were espected to stand at the Club for a significant time but Yusuke clearly thought otherwise.

Current Wycombe Head Coach, Kevin Brooks, who coached Yusuke full time to National finals and medals prior to him moving to the USA and who coaches him when he is home in the UK commented:

“I’m incredibly proud of Yusuke and how he has performed this week at Trials. Every year I’ve worked with him he’s matured and made such great progress and learnt so many lessons. He came into the sport very late as a teenager ... he joined Wycombe after some time at Windsor SC under coach Matt Heathcock. Matt introduced him to competitive swimming whilst Yusuke was at Eton College; and really brought him on. However, when Matt moved jobs, Yusuke moved to Wycombe in early 2015 - but not before he almost decided to quit swimming! Luckily, he didn’t and since this time he’s been an active member of WDSC. It’s taken time but he’s started to make significant progress and really learn about how to train, the technical aspects of his stroke and how to perform in the ‘arena’ . He has a bright future moving forward in swimming, at the young age of 25 – it’ll just be a case of continuing to find balance between working (job) and swimming. I’m so excited to see what the future holds for him”

Massive congratulations on a huge day for you - in terms of performance and in life!
