How to join South Ayrshire Swim Team (SAST)

South Ayrshire Swim Team (SAST) are working in close partnership with South Ayrshire Council’s (SAC) Learn To Swim (LTS) programme to establish a clear pathway from beginner to club swimmer within South Ayrshire. We aim to provide swimming opportunities for all swimmers.

If you are enrolled within South Ayrshire Council’s Learn To Swim programme…

Swimmers within Club Ready are eligible to join SAST’s Development Squads. This will be if the coaches feel that they are ready for additional training opportunities as well as our squads having available space. They can join one of our three squads:

Swimmers within Skills 4 and who have achieved 50% or more of the criteria, are eligible to join our Transition Squad. To be part of this squad, swimmers need to remain within their Skills 4 class until they have achieved 100% (at which point they can move to one of the SAST Development Squads as per the information above). The aim of the squad is to help give swimmers the experience of training within a club environment to supplement their swimming development within the lesson programme and advance their progress.

If you are not enrolled within South Ayrshire Council’s Learn To Swim programme…

Swimmers from out with SAC’s LTS programme can still join SAST but will need to be assessed based on their suitability to join. Once assessed we will recommend the best option to help them in the next stage of their swimming development.

If we feel that they are not quite ready for the club, and they are already in lessons elsewhere, we may recommend coming back for an assessment in a few months’ time once a specific development area has been addressed, which will make the move into SAST much easier for the swimmer involved.

Assessments and Come and Try Sessions will recommence from August 2021.

Due to the success of our assessments in 2019, as well as the Covid related guidelines we are required to follow, we have made the following changes for 2020:

  • Spaces for each assessment will be limited
  • If an assessment is oversubscribed, we will look to add an additional session ASAP

To attend a SAST specific assessment, swimmers must have contacted us, provided us with the relevant information (swimmers name, age, date of birth, current lessons, current stage in lessons, any additional relevant information) and confirmed that they are able to attend the next available date the Monday prior to any assessment.

Candidates deemed suitable to join SAST will be invited, along with their parents, to an induction night at the Citadel. This will include a brief presentation about the club, the swimmer pathways, what can be expected and the roles of volunteers which run the club. This is also an opportunity to ask any questions prior to starting with the club.
