Para-Swimming
Elmbridge Phoenix Swimming Club are strongly committed to supporting and increasing Para-Swimming. We are very lucky to have two insprational para swimmers at the club in Maddie Harris and Masters swimmer Kim Bailey.
Kim has represented Great Britain and is now swimming in the Masters sessions.
Maddie is monitored as an England talent swimmer.
Maddie swam at the National Para-Swimming Championships in Manchester 10-11th December 2016 (Long Course).
Maddie won a gold medal in the 100m Breaststroke in her classification (SB8) age group 10-13 and she won a Bronze medal in the 400m Freestyle in the S9 classification 10-13 age group.
It was a great weekend, 18 of the British Para-Swimming Squad who competed at Rio were also competing at the championships. Maddie was joined by Ellie Robinson - the S6 swimmer who won gold in the 50m Butterfly at Rio and who won the BBC Young Sportsperson of the year 2016, in the same heat of the 100m backstroke. All Maddie could do was stare. I think she was a bit star struck!
Para - Swimming Background
Swimming has been an event at the Paralympic Games since the event was first held in Rome in 1960.
The GBR Para-Swimming team has had great medal success at the Paralympic Games over that time and in other major international events.
Anyone can take part in swimming
The great thing about swimming is that it is an inclusive sport and it is not just at Paralympic level that people with a disability can get involved in swimming.
There are plenty of opportunities at local and regional level for people with a disability to get involved.
Even though disabilities vary the classification system ensures the playing field remains level
Para - Swimmers are encouraged to join our mainstream sessions which consist of swimming and competition technique that can be used by swimmers. Our coaches aim to deliver specific feedback for the needs of each swimmer and in this way the swimmers benefit from improved technique tailored to them, something which is beyond the range of coaching typically offered in disability specific swimming clubs.
