DAY 1

Day 1 of the Regionals was kicked off tonight with Dominic Gunn and coach, Mark Staiger, braving Friday evening Bank Holiday traffic. Dominic swam in his first ever 800m Freestyle – achieving (obviously) a nice PB of 9:33.55 and in the process a new U16 and Open Club Record.

Day 2

Abi Stemp and Lucia Veasey started the day for the Woking Regional swimmers with two great swims in the 50m fly with times of 30.38 and 30.59, placing them a respective 15th and 22nd.

Dominic Gunn, following his gruelling 800m Club Record breaking swim yesterday, opened the boys' swimming with 200m freestyle closely followed by Brin Dorrell in the 100m backstroke, setting a time of 1:04.80 and securing a place in the evening’s finals.

Anna Maine, freshly back from the Commonwealth Games , swam 56.55 in her 100m freestyle heat to secure top spot in the final.

The afternoon’s heats saw the Woking sprinters take to the water and all three boys, Brin Dorrell, Matthew Ferguson and Alex Smith, were rewarded with finals place with times of 25.55 (Brin - 5th place), 24.48 (Matthew - 8th) and top spot for Alex with a time of 23.79sec.

Abi Stemp was back in fine form in 200m fly, swimming a PB heat time of 2:28.72 to take her into the finals in 3rd place.

Last to swim in the Day 2 heats was Holly Gardiner who was thrilled with her Club Record breaking 2 second PB in a time of 1:15.97, taking her through to join the swimmers in the finals.

Day 2 Finals

After a very close 100m freestyle final, Anna Maine (17) was rewarded with a Silver medal, and a Gold  and crowned Regional Champion in her favoured 50m backstroke event.

Alex Smith (28) was the second Woking Champion of the night, this time in the 50m Open Freestyle, with a time of 23.73 secs and Matthew Ferguson (16) improved his time and seeding from the heats to finish 7th in a time of 24.46sec.  Brin Dorrell ( 15), matched his heat time and, in an incredibly close race, just missed out on a medal in 4th place in a time of 25.55sec.

Abi Stemp (15)  was delighted to swim yet another PB in the 200m fly, this time in 2:28.65, and was unlucky not to be rewarded with a medal in 4th place. Holly (19) in her Open 100m breaststroke final was placed 7th.

A great second day for Woking swimmers in the Bank Holiday heat!

Day 3: Heats and Finals

Lucia Veasey, Pippa Sceats, Abi Stemp and Alex Tait started Day 3’s swimming with a solid 22nd place in the 14-16 Medley relay. The 14-16 yr boys were out in force with Dominic Gunn, Ollie Zalaf, Hendrik van der Leest and Brin Dorrell placing a creditable 7th place for the A team and David Bindschedler, Jo Trundle, Victor de Oliveira and Ewan Howell all producing great swims for the B team (congratulation to David for his first sub 1 min 100m free!).

There followed another 7th place for the 15/over Woking boys of Matthew Ferguson, Tom Webb, Noah Trundle and Alex Smith followed by gutsy swims from the Woking B team of Max Dorrell, Miguel Armstrong, Ben Smith and Matt Hammann.

The girls' 50m freestyle sprints saw the trio of Abi Stemp, Lucia Veasey and Alex Tait come home in 22nd, 30th and 37th position with Anna Maine making it through to the evening’s final where, after a tight race, she was rewarded with a bronze Open medal.

Matthew Ferguson followed his 50m fly swim (19th place) with a 100m freestyle swim of 53.60 to take him second fastest into the evening's finals along with Brin Dorrell, through to the finals in his heat time of 57.19sec. Anna Maine joined the boys in the evening final for a second swim, this time in her favoured 100m backstroke.

Finals night saw Brin better his heat time to place 7th in his 100m freestyle in a time of 56.81sec and Matthew, in a competitive open age category, held off the competition to take the silver medal in a time of 53.27sec. Anna Maine did not disappoint, picking up another medal, this time in the 100m backstroke.

Day 4: Heats

Bank Holiday Monday, more heat, more traffic, more swimmers descending upon Wycombe Leisure Centre for the final day of the South East Regional Championships. The boys' relay teams were first up in the 14-16yr Medley relays: Victor de Oliveira, Josh Thompson, Ewan Howell and David Bindschedler all had yet another set of gutsy swims in a competitive field. A very solid 17th position followed from the A team of Brin, Ollie, Hendrik and Dominic followed by another 17th place by the older boys of Matthew F, Max Dorrell, Tom and Noah.

The 14-16 yr Woking girls, Alex, Lucia, Danel Jansen and Abi, opened up the afternoon’s racing in the 4 x 100m Free relay, placing 11th and a great 2nd place finish in their heat.

The 50m boys' backstroke saw Brin sail through to the finals in 2nd seed position with his heat tim e of 29.24sec, whilst Matthew was unlucky to miss out on the finals in close heats, finishing in 11th place.

Keira Doherty (15)  in her first regional championships, did herself proud with a 19th place position in the 50m breast in a time of 37.25 and Pippa Sceats (16) placed 14th in a heat time of 37.05sec.

The last heats of the day and 100m fly for Matthew and Abi who placed in 19th and 13th place, respectively.
