Congratulations to Alex, Sophie, Hendrik, Matthew and Hannah for British Swimming (Olympic) Selection Trials Qualification

Catherine Ferguson

The British Swimming Olympic selection trials, originally to take place at the iconic London Aquatics Centre at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in 2020, will now take place some 12 months later than originally planned, and is now scheduled for 14-18 April 2021.

Due to the ongoing COVID restrictions, continued uncertainty around the exact timetable of easing of lockdown, and in recognition that relatively few swimmers are back in training, the meet was  scaled back, with the ultimate focus being senior selections for international competition later this year including the Tokyo Olympics.

Whilst all but one of our swimmers will not compete, we would like to congratulations our Woking swimmers who had qualified for this prestigious event - a fantastic achievment :

Sophie King (15)   - qualified for Junior 100m Breaststroke

Hendrik van der Leest (17) – qualified for :

  • 50m,100m,200m Junior  Freestyle
  • 100m, 200m Junior  Backstroke
  • 200 IM Junior
  • 100m, 200m Mens Backstroke

Matthew Ferguson (20) – qualified for Men’s 50m, 100m Freestyle

Hannah Burvill (23) – qualified for numerous Womens events

Alex Smith (31) – qualified and will compete in 50m Men’s Freestyle

Sadly, due to the lack of pool training many swimmers will not be taking part at the trials including Sophie, Hendrik, Matthew and Hannah.

Alex Smith will take part in the event and all at Woking wish him the very best of luck next week!
