Woking swimmers headed to Portsmouth this weekend for the South East Winter Short Course Championships where, with only one qualification time for both Junior (under 16) and Senior swimmers, means it's an achievement for our Junior swimmers to qualify for this high level meet.

With only one final in the evening session, the pressure was all on the morning swims for the swimmers as Junior medals are heat declared from morning heats.

Abbi Stemp was in form, producing PB swims in both 200m free, in a time of 2:08.58  and 100m fly in a time of 1:04.93, breaking 1:05 for the first time and earning her a Junior bronze medal and a place in the Open final, where she PBed once again in a time of 1:04.38.

The Woking girls continued their form in the 50m freestyle where Lucia Veasey swam a great 28.28 PB swim, followed by Kiera Heney, smashing through the 28sec barrier in a PB time of 27.78sec. Only three 2005 born girls made the tough qualification times, so Keira was delighted to be the fastest 2005 born sprinter, beating and 16th in the 2003 and younger Junior group.

Brin Dorrell swam a PB 50m fly swim, in a time of 26.75sec, earning him a Junior bronze medal.

Hendrik van der Leest, was once again on fine form, breaking through the 1min barrier in style for the first time in 100m backstroke with a time of 59.26secs and a yet another PB in the 50m fly in a time of 27.26 sec.

Sam Crew swam a great PB in his 50m breast event in a time of 32.14sec, followed by solid swims in the 50m fly (27.06sec) and 100m free.

Dom Holloway, a past swim captain and now  back following his graduation, swam two sub 30sec swims in heats and finals to eventually place 6th in the finals in times of 29.16 and 29.29sec.

Day 2 saw the Woking boys take to the water in the 50m backstroke, where Brin Dorrell came home in a time of 28.09sec, followed by Hendrik van der Leest in 27.63 and Matthew Ferguson in a SC PB of 27.07secs.

An hour delay waiting outside in the cold due to a fire alarm did not deter the Woking Swimmers ....

Dom Holloway returned to form, setting a great 100m breastsroke  time of 1:04.79 sec.

Brin was back for the 50m freestyle, where he secured a time for the Winter Nationals with his heat swim of 24.77sec.  Matthew Ferguson swam a solid 100m fly and 50m free event, as did Sam Crew. The 'splash and dash' title went to Alex Smith who was victorious in the open 50m free even, taking Gold and retaining his South East Champion title in a time of 22.83seconds.

Sam Crew had fine swims in 50m free but the swim of the day must go to Hendrik van der Leest, who smashed his PB in 200m backstroke in a time of 2:07.44, placing him 13th overall and 5th in the Juniors.

Thanks to Mark for some excellent coaching support all weekend.
