Woking claim Top Team Title at Invitational Meet

Woking’s Pool in the Park was the venue for the annual Hants and South Coast Invitational Swimming Meet, where twelve young Woking swimmers all aged 9-11 years, compete against 5 other local clubs. The swimmers are selected to enter a number of mainly 50m events where they earn points for themselves and their club. The teams of Woking, Wey Valley, Alton, Bassett JSF and Haslemere were all vying for the Top Team Title.

Supported by the Club Captain and Vice-Captain, Matthew Ferguson and Brin Dorrell, the Woking swimmers thrived on the night. Of note was 9yr old Max Watt, who, based on points from all his swims, was awarded the top 9-year-old male swimmer of the night with a victory in his 50 freestyle. 11-year-old Denver Zhang stormed home to win his 100IM, 50m fly and 50m free events that earnt him the top 11yr male swimmer.  Individual wins came from Matthew Thompson (10) and and Daniel Orbell (9) in their 50m breast event and Tomomasa Aoki (10) impressed the gallery with his impressive 50m fly and 50m freestyle victories.

Lauren Small (9yr) stormed home to win her 50m free by only the narrowest of margins 0.1 second but convincingly won her 50m fly event by over 13 seconds in a time of 46.79sec and Rita Luzan (11) winning her 50m fly event to earn precious points for the Woking team.

Isla Hanif (10), amongst strong competition, came 2nd in the 50 breast. Isabelle Rose (10) was delighted to place 3rd in 50m back event; Rita Luzan (11), in addition to her 50m fly win, placed 2nd in 50m back.

Lovely swims also by Chloe Hodgson, Erin Murrells and Tom French.

It was the 4 x 50m freestyle relay teams at the end of the night that raised the noise levels in the cheering gallery. The team of Erin Murrells, Isabelle Rose, Lauren Small and Rita Luzan on the final leg all swam fabulous 50m freestyle legs to place 2nd and narrowly miss out on 1st place.  The Woking boys then finished the gala with a spectacular win in the 4 x 50m boys freestyle relay. Aoki Tomomasa, Tom French, Matthew Thompson and Denver Zhang delighted the cheering Woking crowds with a final victory for Woking.

‘A great team event from all these young Woking swimmers’, said coach David Brazil ‘Every point counted on the night and they thoroughly deserved to be awarded overall top club of the night based on all the swims’.
