Report from the 15/over South East Regional Championships

Woking swimmers, on a Bank Holiday weekend, headed to Wycombe to compete in the South East Regional Championships, held at Wycombe's Leisure Centre. Well done to all our swimmers over the last few days.

With no long distance swimmers taking part on Friday evening (Day 1), Woking's races began early on Saturday morning (Day 2).

Day 2: Heats

Josh Thompson started the weekend off for the Woking Regional competition with a great swim in the 50m breast with a time of 33.94, overall finishing 17th.

Abbi Stemp and Lucia Veasey were up next with two great swims in the 50m fly with times of 29.51 and 30.59, placing Abbi 5th fastest into the final and Lucia 12th.

Hendrik van der Leest then stormed through the 15 years 100m Backstroke in a new club record time of 1.00.34 securing the top spot for the final later on.  Brin Dorrell also competed in the 16 years 100m Backstroke finishing 14th in 1.04.36.

The final heats of the morning saw Danel Jansen and Abbi Stemp in the 100m Freestyle both just missing out of the finals finishing in 9th in a time of 1.02.75 and 1.01.63.

The afternoon’s heats saw the Woking sprinters take to the water and up first was Lucia Veasey in 50m Backstroke in a new PB of 33.17. Then it was the turn of the boys in the splash and dash 50m Freestyle with Hendrik van der Leest (25.25), Brin Dorrell (25.01), Dominic Gunn (25.75) and Alex Smith (23.49), were all rewarded with places in the finals. Matthew Ferguson and Sam Crew also took part, Matthew finishing 10th in 24.45 and Sam finishing 17th in 25.02.

Abbi Stemp was back in fine form in 200m fly, swimming a time of 2:27.20 to take her into the finals as 4th seed.

Day 2: Finals

First up in the finals is Abbi Stemp in 50m Fly finishing 5th in a time of 29.58.

Hendrik, seeded first for the final of 15 years 100m Backstroke, secured Gold, breaking the minute barrier for the first time, in 59.50 secs, also breaking his earlier club record.  Hendrik also added Bronze to his medal haul, finishing 3rd in the 50m Freestyle in a new PB of 25.05.

More medal winners from Day 2 came from Brin Dorrell, placing 2nd in 16 years 50m Freestyle in 24.87 and Alex Smith 2nd in the Open 50m Freestyle in a time of 23.57.  Dominic Gunn swimming in his first Regional final finished a very credible 7th place in a new PB time of 25.76.

Abbi Stemp was able to secure her 4th place entry 200m fly final, this time finishing in 2:25.10.

A great first days results for Woking swimmers!

Day 3: Heats

Kiera Heney, Zoe Ryan, Abbi Stemp and Danel Jansen started Day 3’s swimming with a solid 13th place in the 14-16 Medley relay A team and Niamh Uttley, Zoe Griffin, Lucia Veasey and Erin Pritchard placed 25th in the B team. The 14-16 yr boys were out in force with Dominic Gunn, Alex Baldwin, Hendrik van der Leest and Brin Dorrell placing a creditable 9th place in Freestyle Relay.

17 years & Over Freestyle Relay, the team was Matthew Ferguson, Sam Crew, Noah Trundle and Alex Smith claimed a very creditable 6th place.

The girls' 50m freestyle sprints saw Danel Jansen finish just outside the finals in 10th with a time of 28.72. Next up were Brin Dorrell (27.39) and Sam Crew (26.69) taking part in the 50m Butterfly finishing 10th and 14th respectively.

Hendrik was again in fine form placing 1st place going into the final of the 200m Backstroke in a time of 2.11.72. Hendrik then went on the secure another final place finishing 4th in the 100m Freestyle in 55.90 just outside his PB.  Also up in the 100m Freestyle were Brin Dorrell finishing 10th in 56.37 and Sam Crew 14th 55.01.  Matthew Ferguson took the final spot in the evenings finals by finishing 2nd in 53.40.

Day 3: Finals

Hendrik was up first in the Finals of the 200m Backstroke claiming Gold and a new PB and Club record of 2.09.6.

The final swim of the day came from Matthew Ferguson in 100m Freestyle narrowly missing the medals finishing in 4th place in 53.43.

Day 4: Heats

Bank Holiday Monday saw more swimmers descend upon Wycombe Leisure Centre for the final day of the South East Regional Championships. The boys' relay teams were first up in the 14-16yr Medley relays: Hendrik van der Leest, Joshua Thompson, Brin Dorrell and Dominic Gunn finished 7th in a competitive field. The older boys of Matthew Ferguson, Max Dorrell, Sam Crew and Noah Trundle fought well finishing in 10th.

The 14-16 yr girls, Danel Jansen, Zoe Ryan, Kiera Heney and Abbi Stemp, opened up the afternoon’s racing in the 4 x 100m Freestyle relay, placing 5th and a 25th place finish for the B team of Zoe Griffin, Emma Gandy, Erin Pritchard and Lucia Veasey.

The 50m boys' backstroke saw Hendrik van der Leest, Brin Dorrell and Matthew Ferguson all sail through to the finals. Hendrik 1st seed with 28.58, Brin 7th seed with a time of 29.20 and Matthew 3rd seed in  27.77.

Zoe Griffin in her first regional championships, did herself proud with a 17th place position in the 50m breast in a time of 36.99..

The last heats of the day and 100m fly for Hendrik van der Leest, Sam Crew and Abbi Stemp who placed in 3rd (1.01.41), 12th (59.62) and 2nd (1.05.46) place, respectively.

Day 4: Finals

And what a great way to finish the weekend with another Gold for Hendrik van der Leest in the 50m Backstroke in 28.45 and Brin 6th place in 28.80.  Abbi Stemp also stormed to Bronze in 100m Fly final finishing in a time of 1.05.42.

We now eagerly await the 14/under regional championships to be held over two weekends, 11/12th and 25th/26th May.
