Our Learn to Swim Academy once again entered the Poole Lions Club Annual Swimathon, a sponsored team swim, which took place back in February. It was a particularly successful night for Poole Swimming Club on Wednesday night, as a group of athletes, as well as our very own Dr Jan were recognised for their achievements in 2019 at the Poole Sports Awards. The Mayor of Poole, Councillor Marion Le Poidevin, was in attendance, along with other local dignitaries, to congratulate recipients. It is with deep sadness that Poole Swimming Club have heard of the death of Wendy, after a short illness which was so bravely borne. The club’s sympathy is with Wendy’s husband Alan, and children Jo and Paul, and their grandchildren, and all of Wendy’s family at this very sad time. Poole Swimming Club would like to say a huge thank you and well done to the Swimmers in Gold Squad who set themselves a challenge to swim 4 ½ miles in their Around Brownsea Island Challenge in their swim sessions. The amazing squad not only completed this, but raised a huge amount of money too: £341.58 in total! Dr Jan’s National 2 Squad headed north for a weekend of racing at Ponds Forge International in Sheffield at this year’s popular Burns Meet. The principal aim was to gain experience at this pool, as the squad have set themselves the goal to race there at British/English Nationals in July/August. The culminating competitive event of 2019 took to Rossmore Leisure Centre where the Poole Swimming Club Distance Club Championships were held, seeing members swim the 800m Free on Saturday and 1500m Free on Sunday. As part of the Swim England Pathway Programme, we would like to congratulate Robbie H on his selection to the National Event Camp starting on the 17th December for 4 days. He will be joining a cohort of 90 other swimmers who are generally British Summer Championship Medallists in each Olympic event. The Camp is split across Sheffield or Millfield for 4 days depending on each athlete's main event. Last week, over 100 swimmers from Poole attended the West Dorset Level 3 meet, held in Dorchester on December 7th and 8th. There were two gruelling days of hard, heavy performances from everyone who swam. With over 150 medals won across the 5 sessions, the meet brought with it many PBs. A small band of swimmers from Poole Swimming Club headed up the well-paved northern routes to Sheffield for the Swim England Winter National Championships. A short course event where the pool had been transformed into a Christmas light show with banging anthems for athletes that made the walkout in finals.
