Jan Hutchings Reports From the National Development Camp 2020

I was delighted to be invited to be part of this event. Having been a skills coach for the last 2 years on National Development camps I saw this as a great opportunity to work with some of the best 15 and 16 year olds in England.

The swimmers I worked with over the weekend were the 200m Butterfly swimmers.

We split into breakout rooms with the remit of getting to know the individuals and understand how they felt. Our main input as skills coaches was to deliver the session on Race profiling and Race Modelling on Sunday morning. Having seen Jacob Peters develop as a 200m Butterfly swimmer I did a presentation which included Jacob’s journey. I also showed videos of the 2016 Olympic finals in Rio in 2016 and highlighted how the best in the world swim.

Although the camp this year was delivered online and ran as a “virtual camp”, it was really enjoyable. I always pick up information when attending National Camps and it’s great to work with swimmers who are engaged and keen to progress.

I’ve already been advised that I’ll be invited to coach on the camp next year and I’m already looking forward to it. My hope is though I’ll actually be with the swimmers so that I get to coach them face to face. The expectation is that the camps will run either in Sheffield or at Millfield.
