South West Regional Championships Weekend 1 2023

As the sun shone on a lovely spring morning PSC’s young Regional qualifiers made their way up to Millfield for the start of a busy weekend of racing. Preparations for the first weekend of the Regional Summer Championships had all gone well and our swimmers were primed and ready to go.

Saturday – AM Heats

The first event of the morning was the Girls 200m Butterfly. Both Grace and Blossom (14 years) swam well to finish in 10th and 13th position overall respectively.

The next event was the boys 200m Freestyle where we had 6 boys competing. Leo C (11/12 years) put in a great swim to place 9th overall with a superb 3-second PB. In the 13 years age group Jack and Damian, both swam PB’s to earn a place in the final in the afternoon. Harry (13th place) and Connor (33rd place) also put in some well-paced swims. Leo W (14 years) swam in the last heat in this event to earn himself a place in the final along with the younger boys.

In the Girl's 50m Backstroke, we had 8 girls competing. Daria (11/12 years) swam a PB to earn the 8th spot in the final. Poppy also swam a PB finishing in 13th place. In the 13 years age group Sophie and Macie put in a couple of great swims to place 3rd and 7th respectively to go into the final with ease. Halle surprised herself with a 1-second PB coming 15th overall. In the 14 years age group Erin came 17th; Louise came 32nd and Lexie earned herself a place in the final placing 6th overall.

Next up came the boys in the 100m Backstroke. In the 11/12 years age group, Oliver and Leo C swam brilliantly. Leo’s time earned himself a place in the final in 2nd place. Harry, Connor, Jack and Damian swam well too with Jack easing into the final in 3rd place. Damian’s time was good enough to earn himself a place in the final, but he opted instead to focus on his 50m Butterfly event later in the day. Rounding off this event was Finley (14 years) who swam a superb long course PB to finish in 23rd place.

The final event of the morning was the Girl's 400m Freestyle where we had 3 girls racing in the 11/12 years age group. Poppy surpassed herself to win our first medal of the day with an 11-second PB and earn herself a silver medal. Teammates Daria and Millie finished in 8th place and 12th place overall and this was a great way to close off the morning session.

Saturday – PM Heats

The first session of the afternoon was the boy's 100m Breaststroke. Leo C (11/12 years) swam a PB to place 7th and a place in the final. In the 13 years age group Alexander D-R came 23rd; Philip came 10th and Harry made it into the final placing 6th overall. In the oldest age group, Christopher placed 15th. The Girl's 200m IM saw some more good swims with Daria making another final in the 11/12 years age group. Teammate Poppy came 13th. In the 13 years age group Halle came 11th and Macie came 16th.

Our boys enjoyed more success in the 50m Butterfly which produced some big PBs from Henry; Harrison and Jack F (11/12 years) and Harry (13 years).

Damian (13 years) put in a great swim in gaining his first ever “sub 30-second” time. Leo staked a place in the final coming in 4th place in the 14-year category with Alex E (13th) and Finley (50th). Girls making it through to the finals in the 50m Breaststroke across all three age categories were Daria: ranked 5th (11/12 years), Halle: ranked 1st (13 years) with Macie, Sophie, Carmen, Millie, Megan and Winter putting in good swims. The last event of the session was the boy's 400 IM where Christopher was our only swimmer. So, lots to look forward to later on in the finals…..

Saturday – Finals

Jack and Damian’s first-afternoon final was the 13-year 200m Freestyle. Jack surpassed himself by improving on his heat time by 4 seconds to finish in 5th place. Damian finished in 6th place. Leo W matched Jack’s efforts by coming 5th in the 14-year age group. In the next set of finals, Daria finished 8th in the 11/12 years 50 Backstroke; Macie placed 4th  and Sophie placed 5th (13 years) and Lexie placed 6th (14 years).

Leo C was up next in the 100 Backstroke 11/12 years category where, once again, he paced his race really well to finish 2nd and win our second medal of the day. Jack followed in the 13-year final against some big and strong boys but just missed out on his top three finishing in 5th place.

As the finals came thick and fast Daria moved up from 6th to 3rd place in the 200 IM to win a bronze medal with a 5-second improvement on her heat time. Leo C then came 5th in the 50 Breaststroke (11/12 years) and Harry came 6th (13 years). With hardly any rest at all Daria laid claim to her second bronze medal of the afternoon in the 50m Breaststroke (11/12 years) with a determined swim. Halle then went one better to take our second silver medal of the afternoon in the 13 years age group with an impressive swim. The finals of the boy's 50m Butterfly brought more success. In the 13 years age group, Damian was able to step up on his heat time and take the silver medal with another Personal Best time. The 14-year boy's race was just as exciting with Leo W narrowly missing out on a medal by only 0.04 seconds and finishing 4th.

Day 2 Sunday – AM Heats.

We had five events to look forward to on Sunday morning after an impressive first day. The opening event was the girl's 200 Backstroke. Across the three age groups, Poppy, Daria, Macie and Erin made it through to the finals. Other good swims came from Sophie and Ava. The heat swim of the morning came from Leo C in the 200 Breaststroke (11/12 years) as he stormed into the final with the fastest time. In the 13 years age group Harry claimed his place in the final in 5th place and teammates Philip, Alex and Christopher all swam personal best long course times. Poppy and Daria continued their good form with personal best times in the 100 Butterfly. So too did Grace as she finished in 15th place.

The next event was the eagerly awaited boys' 100m Freestyle. In the 13 years age group, the heat swims from our boys were impressive with Jack and Damian vying for the first spot. The honours narrowly went to Jack by a margin of only 0.05 seconds. Could the boys dip under the 1-minute mark in the finals we wondered. Harry swam a lovely 100 Freestyle by swimming another personal best time to place 17th. Leo W swam a great heat swim in the 14 years age group to take the fastest lane in the final in 1st place. Teammate Alex E came 14th with a super swim.

The last event of the session was the Girls 50 Freestyle where a stack of personal bests followed. The first one came from Daria (6th place); Millie (11th place); Rebecca (24th place) in the 11/12 years age group. Poppy (11/12 years) and Ava (13 years) were marginally outside their best times. Sophie completed the heat swims for us as she made it into the final of the 13 years age group in 6th place.

Sunday finals

Sunday finals promised so much, and the results proved to be just as good on the second day of the weekend.

Up first came Poppy and Daria in the 11/12 years 200m Backstroke. Both girls swam a great race with Poppy just touching ahead of Daria to take the bronze medal and Daria coming 4th. This was a great race to watch. Macie placed 5th in the 13 years age group in this event and Erin placed 6th in the 14 years age group improving on her heat time.

In the boy's 200m Breaststroke, the anticipation was focussed on Leo C who had provided the fastest time in the heats earlier in the day. Leo surpassed himself by swimming over 4 seconds quicker to take our first gold of the weekend. Harry held onto 5th place in the 13 years age group in yet another strong final.

The eagerly awaited 13 year final between Jack and Damian in the boy's 100 Freestyle certainly did not disappoint. Damian had the better start in the final and was first to touch the wall at the 50-metre mark. As the boys came down the final length though Jack started to edge his way back. With only 5 metres to go, it was neck and neck and it all came down to the final touch. Who would get first place? Who would take second place? Could the boys dip under that 1-minute mark? And it was……... Jack swimming a superb 59.96 in 1st place and Damian in 2nd place 1:00.28. Fantastic racing boys – you did the club proud. More importantly, you both showed great team spirit and sportsmanship.

As soon as the 13-year boys had finished it was all eyes on the 14-year race. Leo W had another excellent swim in winning our final medal of the day by taking the bronze medal with a time that was marginally slower than his heat time.

The final event of the Sunday finals session was the girl's 50 Freestyle where Daria came 7th in the 11/12 years age group with Sophie matching her to come 7th in the 13-year age group.

Sunday – 1500m Freestyle (Heat Declared Winner)

Further success came for Jack in the last session of the day in the 1500m Freestyle event as he came 4th swimming a well-paced race. In the 16-year age group, Arron came 5th overall.

So, that was it. We’d seen a fantastic weekend of racing and there were so many positives to take away from this opening weekend. In closing, there is much to look forward to and wish all the swimmers well as they head to Plymouth and Bristol.

A final thank you must go to our poolside team: Coach Jan; Coach Chris; Coach Jacob and Team Managers Tracey, Rona and Dave along with a BIG thank you too to our amazing officials, poolside volunteers, our loyal parents and supporters.
