South West Regional Summer Championships Report

Weekend 3: 13th – 14th May 2023

After our success in the pool in Millfield and Plymouth, the team were up and ready for another weekend of racing. The venue for the last weekend of the Regional Summer Championships took place at Hengrove Leisure Centre’s 50 metre pool in Bristol. As mentioned in our last report, there was so much to look forward to this weekend and we really did finish on a high with so many medals, finalists and personal best swims.

The weather was warm and sunny and there was lots to celebrate so, read on…..

Session 1: Saturday – Heats

The weekend got underway with the boys 200m Butterfly where Jack F (11/12 years) earned himself a place in the final. In the 13-year age group Damian also eased his way into a final with a superb heat swim.  The first girls’ event of the morning was the 200m Freestyle which saw Daria, Poppy and Millie (11/12 years) and Ava (13 years) all swimming nice PB’s.

The boys 50m Backstroke, produced some impressive swims from Leo (11/12 years); Jack P, Damian, Connor (13 years); and Zachary, Finley, Nathan and Alex E (14 years). Leo’s time too him into the 11/12 years final with the 2nd fastest time. In the 13 years age group Jack P and Damian stormed into the finals ranked 2nd and 3rd respectively.

The girls 100m Backstroke was a busy event for us as Milllie, Mia, Poppy, Ava, Daria Sophie Lexie, Macie and Erin all swam well with Daria, Sophie and Macie progressing into the finals. Erin just missed out on a place in the final however she bettered the personal best time she had swum in Swansea only a week ago to finish a very respectable 10th place. The morning’s events ended with the boys 400 Freestyle. Jack P (13 years) swam a long course best time of 4’41.94 and narrowly missed out on a top 3 place with a brave and determined swim finishing in 5th place. His teammate Leo W also finished in 5th place in the 14 years age group to set us up brilliantly for session two.

Session 2: Saturday – Heats

Further success came in the pool in the afternoon session as we looked forward to the girls 100m Backstroke; the boys 200 IM; the girls 50m Butterfly; the boys 50m Breaststroke and the girls 400m IM. The eagerly awaited girls 100m breaststroke produced a host of long course personal best times from: Daria, Lilly, Millie, Poppy, Blossom, and Winter. Halle put in a great heat swim to set her up nicely for the final later. Daria also progressed into the final in this event qualifying in 5th place.

The ensuing boy’s event was the 200m IM. In the 11/12 years age group Leo C put in a fantastic swim to earn himself a PB in this event. Other PB’s came from Damian and Harry in the 13 years category. Finalist places were earned by Leo C (11/12 years); Damian (13 years) and Leo W (14 years). All these boys swam long course PB’s which was great to see.

Next came the girls 50m Butterfly which again produced a stack of good swims from Daria, Millie and Poppy (11/12 years); Carmen, Sophie, Macie, Halle (13 years) and Grace, Erin, Louise (14 years).

The last boy’s event of the day was the 50m Breaststroke which saw three boys qualify for the finals later in the day (Leo C, Jack P and Harry). Alexander D finished in a creditable 18th place overall in the 13 years age group with a 4 second long course best time.

The heats ended with the girls 400m IM which saw Daria gaining our first medal of the day as she picked up a bronze medal in the 11/12 years category. Blossom finished off our heat swims where she gained herself a long course best time in the 14 years age group.

Session 1 – Finals

Our first final of the day was the 11/12 years 200m Butterfly. Jack F finished in 7th place with a courageous swim in such a tough event. In the 13 years age group Damian swam superbly. Having led for 199 metres of the race Damian narrowly missed out on the gold medal to finish in second place in another personal best time and improve on his heat time by over 3 seconds. Damian’s time of 2’30.03 produced a 13-year boys club record which was set by Poole SC’s Olympian Jacob Peters in 2013.

In a nail biting final in the 11/12-year girls 200m Freestyle, Daria and Poppy battled it out to finish 4th and 5th respectively with only 0.01 second between them. Ava finished 8th in the 14-year age group.

The 50m Backstroke saw us pick up 3 more medals in finals. Leo C continued his good form to take silver in the 11/12 years 50m Backstroke final. Jack P was able to match him and take the silver medal in the 13 years age group. In the same race Damian took bronze. Great racing boys!

This race was closely followed by the girls 100m Backstroke event. Daria came 5th (11/12 years); Sophie came 5th and Macie 7th (13 years).

Leo C picked up another silver in the 200m IM with a 4 second step up on his heat time. Other finalists in this event were Damian who finished 7th in the 13 years (no mean feat in his 3rd final of the afternoon) and Leo W who finished an impressive 4th in the 14 years.

In the last girl’s event of the day Daria finished 4th in the 11/12 years 100m Breaststroke to conclude a tiring and busy schedule.

In the same event Halle swam a great final in the 13 years age group taking the bronze medal in a time of 1’19.10. This was another best time for Halle which will take her up the National ranking lists and improve her placing for English Nationals in the summer.

So that concluded the events for Saturday as everyone reflected on a brilliant day and headed back to reflect on the day and a well-deserved rest.

Session 3: Sunday - Heats

With the team still buzzing we looked ahead to the final day of this year’s Championships on another sunny and bright morning in Bristol…..

Sunday morning kicked off with the boys 200m Backstroke and a surfeit of PB’s cane from Leo C (11/12 years); Jack P (13 years) and Nathan and Finley (14 years). Finalists for this event included Leo (ranked 1st) in the 11/12 years and Jack (ranked 5th) in the 13 years.

The next event, the girls 200m Breaststroke, produced more PB’s from Mia, Daria, Winter, Macie and Blossom with Halle just outside her season’s best time.

The boys 100m Butterfly proved to be exciting event with more PB’s coming from Harrison and Jack F (11/12 years) and Damian (13 years). Other impressive times came from Leo W.

The club was well represented in the girls 100m Freestyle as we had six girls racing. Great work and well done to Daria, Poppy, Millie; Sophie, Ava and Grace. In the 11/12 years age group Daria, Poppy and Millie made it through to the final in 3rd, 5th and 8th place respectively and this promised to be an exciting final with hardly anything between the three girls.

The last heat of the morning was the Boys 50m Freestyle. This was another exciting event with a surplus of great swims coming from Leo C (11/12 years); Damian, Jack, Harry, Connor (13 years) and Leo W, Alexander E and Zachary (14 years). Leo C’s time was good enough to put him into the final in 7th place. Damian (13 years) and Leo W (14 years) qualified 1st and Jack qualified 5th so, this proved be a very productive afternoon.

Session 3: Sunday – Finals

And so to the Sunday finals……

Leo C was relishing his first ever South West Region Summer Championships as he picked up yet another silver medal in the Boys 11/12 years 200m Backstroke. Jack P continued a great run of finals as he placed 6th in the 13 years category in the same event.

The girls 200m Breaststroke saw Daria edged out narrowly into 4th place but it was pleasing to see her improve on her heat time. In the 13 years category Halle picked up her 3rd medal of the championships by taking bronze and Winter placed 8th (14 years). Three boys represented us in the 100m Butterfly with both Jack F and Harrison showing what great teammates they were as they finished 7th and 8th respectively in the 11/12 years age group. Damian continued his fine form as he swam yet another PB to take the gold medal he had been searching for in the 100m butterfly final (13 years) and another boys club record in the process. This was a wonderfully contested race which Damian led from start to finish leaving his fellow competitors in his wake to win in a best ever time of 1’04.83.

The event we all looked forward to was the race between Millie, Daria and Poppy in the final of the 11/12 years 100m Freestyle. Girls, you didn’t disappoint us, as you all swam a fantastic race with Daria taking the bronze medal and swimming another PB in the process. Both Poppy and Mille gained highly commendable placings as they stepped up on their heat times to finish 6th and 7th.

Watching the girls in this event must have inspired the boys for last few finals of the day which was the boys 50m Freestyle. Leo C finished 7th in the 11/12 years age group. Shortly afterwards, Damian and Jack P (13 years) stepped up onto the blocks. Both boys swam brilliantly with Damian taking gold in another personal best time of 27.25.  Jack finished just behind him in 4th place with another best time of 28.27. Leo W finished the afternoon  finals in fine style by leading from start to finish and taking gold in the 14 years category and also improving on his heat time. Fantastic swimming boys - you did us all proud!

So, that was it…. What a final session!

The Regional Summer Championships finished with the 800m Freestyle where we had a good number of swimmers racing.

In the girl’s events Poppy placed 5th in the 11/12 years age group and Halle placed 5th in the 13 years age group.

In the boys events Jack P placed 6th in the 13 years category. Leo placed 4th in the 14 years age group, Cody placed 10th in the 15 years category.

Arron place 9th in the 16 years age group and Ollie and Xavier placed 7th and 8th respectively. All the swimmers in this event paced their swims well and produced some very pleasing times.

In closing, congratulations go to all our Regional qualifiers and thank you to our parents for your dedication and commitment with our swimmers. A final thank you must also go to the coaching team and our poolside team managers Dave, Rona and Tracey for your hard work this weekend in nurturing and supporting our swimmers. A big shout out too to Daniel and Luke for all your hard work in marshalling which is never and easy task. Thank you too to all the officials and volunteers who help behind the scenes to make our club a success – we can’t do it without you.

We can now look forward to the next competition and reflect on some fine results at the South West Region Summer Championships 2023.
