Southern Junior League 2019 - Round 2

Tom Dowden

The anticipation always steps up a notch in the second round of SJL and this year was no exception. This was another challenging round for us against the 2018 SJL League winners Swim Bournemouth, but PSC were focussed, prepared and ready to race it out to deliver their best!

Newcomers in the team and PSC debuts in SJL:

9 yrs: JACK P
10 yrs: LOUIS G
11 yrs: FREDDIE H

A special mention must go to Eliza C from Silver Squad who stepped in at the last minute and joined the team on poolside as our 9-year-old girl reserve swimmer. Thanks, Eliza!

Notable swims and PBs came from the following swimmers:

Freestyle: Roberta B; Abi S (50m)
Butterfly: Luca S; Freddie H (50m); Nathan D (25m)
Breaststroke: Lottie V; Mason E; Martha M (50m)
Backstroke: Abi S (50m)
The Boys 10-12yrs Medley team and Freestyle team

Throughout the evening, Poole performed strongly, as reflected in our placings:

RESULTS: 1st = 27; 2nd = 17; 3rd = 4; DQ = 1; 15 x Short Course PBs

Scores were close throughout the evening, but Poole’s lead continued to grow in the second half of the night, with a wonderful, if deafening, Cannon win at the end, to seal the deal.

And when the Virtual Gala scores from the various venues came in, Coach Jan was delighted to confirm that Poole were indeed out in front, corroborating the team’s strong display at the Littledown.

VIRTUAL GALA SCORES FOR THE 23 TEAMS IN THE LEAGUE AFTER 2 ROUNDS:

1ST: PSC 1945 points

2ND: PLYMOUTH LEANDER 1798 points

3RD: SWIM BOURNEMOUTH A 1793 points

4TH: SWINDON DOLPHIN 1749 points

5TH: BRISTOL PENGUINS 1595 points

6TH: KEYNSHAM 1433 points

Jan also remarked that The 8 x 25m cannon at the end was exceptional:

“It was so good to see us winning the final event”.

Coaches ran an SJL team practice the evening before the gala at the Dolphin pool, which they feel strongly helped to bring the team together. Thanks to the PSC coaches and the team for making a big effort on this, as it does make a difference.

Thank you to Team Captains: Jamie Mc and Lucy G for their excellent team talks before the gala.

SJL is all about racing for your team, gaining a sense of belonging in the club and learning to support and rally one another to success. These are skills needed, too, for individual performances in other competitions throughout the year and are vitally important. If you know your team has your back, it spurs you on to do better. The coaches smiles and the team cheers at the close of the meet demonstrated that PSC team spirit is in great shape, which bodes well for the next date in your diary:

Final Round is on 14th September. Venue TBC
