Dorset Development Meet Report

Tom Dowden

Littledown July 6th & 7th 2019

This sunny weekend saw swimmers from Youth Potential, Rising Stars and Youth Performance race at the Dorset Development Meet at Littledown. While the rest of Poole may have been enjoying the sunshine, our PSC swimmers were focussed and ready to race, in an effort to smash out end-of-season times and implement strategic improvements, as the year’s training came to fruition.

Becky’s highlights from Youth Potential were numerous.

  • Ben D swam fantastically, taking a huge amount of time off his 400 Freestyle. His 100 Backstroke was excellent and reflected his hard work to improve on this stroke, as did his PBs on Sunday.
  • Ollie D showed great potential in his IM, looking like he may be following closely behind his brother at specialising in this type of event.
  • Nuala, as well as qualifying as a Judge 1 over the weekend, won a hard-fought PB in her 100 fly, holding a really strong breathing pattern on her last length. Her Freestyle events were great too, showing her strength and fitness to take off another 2 seconds from just 2 weeks ago at Club Champs.
  • Joe O’C gained PBs in all but one race over the weekend! His 400 freestyle was particularly impressive, only the second time he’s ever raced this event.
  • Coach Becky was impressed with Izzy R’s great efforts on Saturday, just lacking a little power in the back end of races, due to exam focuses, but showing great potential for next season.

Meghan noted that “A great display of swimming stamina and technique improvement was on display”. Rising Stars stand out performances came from:

  • Sully Baylis, who had a phenomenal weekend and PB’d most of his events having a sensational 100 BK knocking off a further 9 secs from club champs!
  • Ben Jackson showed some excellent self motivation with his pre-pool preparation exercises resulting in a very successful 50FLY of 37sec shaving off 3 seconds!
  • Poppy Bleazard improved incredibly on her 100FC showing true grit and determination gaining her a time of 1.18 (6 sec PB)

Across the squad it was clear to see evidence of much improved Starts, and U/W work to the 5m flags. Again a really positive meet with some outstanding PB’s.

Chris was delighted with stellar performances from his squad:

  • Hannah D with her Freestyle PB. A great milestone achieved!
  • Freddie P, who came away with several medals after some great swims.
  • Holly Olding cleaned up, risking neck strain on the way home with her 8-medal haul!

Finally, a huge well done to the following Poole swimmers for winning meet awards and putting the club on the map:

  • Lucy S: TOP FEMALE SWIMMER! and Fastest Swim Award for 400m Free.
  • Nuala:   Fastest Swim Award for 200m Free.
  • Ben J:          Most Improved Swimmer for IM.

Congratulations, too, to Alysha G, who has also qualified as a Judge 1, whilst fitting in a busy schedule of swimming around this training.

With thanks, as ever, to Coaches Becky, Meghan (who was also facing end of year exams!) and Chris as well as Team Managers Maralyn, Mike, Jacob D and Geri O and not forgetting the parental support crew, who were melting in the
